Newberg campus closes tomorrow for mid-semester holiday

Newberg campus offices will be closed tomorrow (Friday) for the mid-semester holiday. The Murdock Library will be closed, but the 24-hour space will remain open. The library will resume regular hours of operation over the weekend.

The Bruin Store will be open for regular hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) on Friday.

Update on Canyon Commons hours for fall break weekend

Bon Appetit will have special hours for the fall break weekend:

  • The Bridge Café and Maker’s Market will be closed tomorrow (Friday).
  • Friday and Saturday dinner in Canyon Commons will end early at 6:30 p.m.

Take a cooking class at the Bruin Community Pantry on Nov. 4

The Bruin Community Pantry is thrilled to announce the inaugural cooking class in the Nutrition Matters Kitchen.

Here are the details:

  • Friday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m.
  • At the Bruin Community Pantry
  • We will be making broccoli chicken casserole, with either rice or pasta
  • Limited to eight people (a waiting list will be set up)
  • There is no charge for this first class
  • Sign up using this form.

This is the first class in our newly renovated Nutrition Matters Kitchen. We will be scheduling more classes in the future. Due to the space size, we are limited to eight participants. This class will use food from the food bank with additional ingredients to elevate the dish. Participants will have a dish to take home.

Host a student overnight during Bruin Preview

The fall Bruin Preview event is just around the corner, when prospective students will get an inside look at what it’s like to be a Bruin! This includes visiting classes, eating in the dining hall, and staying overnight on campus.

Calling all student-athletes: Join Mental Health Forum tonight in Canyon Commons

Calling all student-athletes! Please join us as we dive deeper into topics that are very relevant to you and your mental health. We’re hosting a forum in Canyon Commons 101-103 tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Our hope is that this roundtable session leads to great conversation around breaking the stigma of mental health, equips you with tools to feel confident in handling a mental health crisis, and provides resources that will benefit the health and well-being of your team.

Topics include:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Masculinity
  • Body image and self-esteem
  • Athlete burnout
  • “More than an athlete” (unraveling identity from sport)
  • Methods of self-care
  • Caring for teammates who have experienced trauma/mental health, and
  • Healing and growing from your past

You can pick and choose the topics that you want to learn about. Come in, pick a table that has the topic you want, talk and listen for 15 minutes, and then head to the next table. There will be a doctoral student leading each table.

The new COVID (Bivalent) Pfizer vaccines are here! If you are interested in receiving the new Pfizer Bivalent COVID vaccine, please call Molly at 503-554-2340 to schedule an appointment.

Note that our COVID vaccination clinics are only available on Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m., and on Friday, Oct. 14, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. for now. We will plan for more clinics at a later time based on the amount of responses we receive. The vaccines are free of charge for all!

If you’ve had a concussion, please fill out this survey

If you’ve ever had a concussion, please participate in this senior research study on gender disparities during concussion recovery. Participation in the study includes filling out a single survey that should take no more than 20 minutes to complete.

This research will be used to determine a correlation between gender and symptom severity and the recovery rates of concussions. We hope this research will be beneficial for developing better treatment plans and guidelines for concussions.

All are invited to attend a 2022 General Election Candidates Fair this Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Hear from local candidates running for office in Newberg and the Oregon Legislature. George Fox University’s Civility Project will co-host, with the Newberg City Club and the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce, a series of four forums for candidates running for local and state offices:

  • Oregon House Districts 23 and 24: 10 to 11 a.m.
  • Yamhill County Commissioner: 11:10 to 11:55 a.m.
  • Newberg Mayor: 12:05 to 12:50 p.m.
  • Newberg City Council: 1 to 2:30 p.m.

All the candidates for these positions have been invited, and nearly all of them are expected to attend. They will answer questions and give brief statements about their campaigns in each forum, and will have campaign information available.

You will also have a chance to endorse a Newberg Area Civility Pledge as well as get information about other races on the ballot.

The city of Newberg is calling all students to consider applying to serve on a local committee, commission or board!

As a student commissioner, you will engage with city leaders, provide input on action items and serve as a voting member (except Budget Committee). Meetings typically range from four to 12 times a year, and the meeting format varies by committee.

Experience on a committee stands out on a resume and will provide excellent experience in interpersonal communication skills. Applications are open and will close on Nov. 4. Student terms are one year in length. Learn more and apply here.
