Disability & Accessibility Services is looking for several exam proctors for the upcoming year. Interested in science fiction? Ever wondered about how people in the past imagined the future? Then HIST 485: The Past of the Future may be for you.

HIST 485: The Past of the Future is a cultural history of science fiction in which students explore the artifacts of science fiction genre (short stories, novels, pulp fiction, radio shows, film, graphic novels, games, music, and TV shows) and consider their place in the historical context in which they were produced.

We’ll engage a variety of these throughout the semester with possible science fiction “artifacts,” including Voltaire’s Micromégas, Shelley’s Frankenstein, Hawthorne’s Rappacini’s Daughter, Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues, H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine, A Trip to the Moon (the first sci-fi movie), comics such as Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, the War the the Worlds radio show, Godzilla (original film, 1954), the original Star Trek, David Bowie’s Space Oddity, Afrofuturism, and lots more!

As a new academic year approaches, the Bruin Community Pantry food bank will undergo some significant changes. First of all, sometime in mid-August, we will be relocating to Lewis Apartment #1. The Lewis Apartments are right across from the Roberts Center on Sherman Street, at 1404 Sherman St.

We don’t know the exact date we’ll be moving, but we anticipate that when we do we will be closed for at least a week. Please check the Bruin Community Pantry website for updates.

Interested in further developing your leadership skills? We encourage you to enroll in a new one-credit, pass/no-pass class this fall, Introduction to Multicultural Leadership, taught by D’Metri Mattocks and Dave Johnstone.

Increasingly our campus and our world builds teams which are diverse in perspectives, worldviews and cultures. We want to provide a few tools and prompts to begin developing skills on how to strengthen or be part of such teams.

The class, called LEAD 260 (“Leadership ADVANCE” in the course schedule), will be experiential, conversational, a little experimental, and hopefully fun and engaging. All are welcome. It will meet on Thursdays from noon to 1:15 p.m.

No current leadership role is necessary. No past experience is necessary. There are no prerequisites.

The university community is invited to the Interprofessional Primary Care Institute’s (IPC Institute) annual Primary Behavioral Healthcare Essentials three-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) session via Zoom Aug. 24-26.

Dr. Patti Robinson, cofounder of the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model and Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, will speak, as will Dr. Julie Oyemaja an early PCBH implementer, clinician and relational leader.

Beyond Backpacks is looking for George Fox volunteers to help children pick out school supplies and have fun on the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 19. The organization provides a shopping experience to local children in need of backpacks and school supplies.

Volunteers are needed from 1:15 to 3:30 p.m. to guide students and their families through the process, and assist at supply and activity tables. Also, we’re looking for a student to be Pennington Bear and greet the families at check-in. The event will be held at Northwest Christian Church (2315 Villa Road, Suite 100).

Last year, George Fox students and employees volunteered at our first Newberg event. The school-age children enjoy interacting with Fox students, giving them an opportunity to meet college students and see the possibilities for their future.

We are doctoral clinical psychology students at George Fox University conducting a study on adversity and eating. The study involves filling out an online survey, which will take approximately 20 minutes total to complete. Participants will receive a $15 Amazon gift card upon successful completion of the survey.

This summer, George Fox is once again planning to march in the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival grand parade on Saturday, July 29. We are inviting students to join in marching with us from 10 a.m. to noon.

Staging occurs at Renne Field behind Edwards Elementary School. (Please note staging for the parade takes place at 9 a.m.). This is an amazing opportunity to celebrate our connection and love for Newberg!

According to the National Weather Service, the region is under a heat advisory for today (Wednesday). Temperatures are expected above 91 degrees in some areas and will range between 87 to 90 degrees for the remainder of the week. The region also is in a critical fire weather pattern.

If you are working in a building without air conditioning or outdoors, please schedule work during the coolest parts of the day. Take advantage of cooler buildings such as the Murdock Library, Klages, or Canyon Commons.

Also, stay hydrated by drinking water every 20 minutes. During the hottest part of the day, check on fellow employees every hour to two hours, and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

Over the next few days plant services will be testing our fire sprinkler systems on campus. When they test, the fire alarm may briefly activate the horn/strobes for a second and then shut down. In some buildings, there will only be a trouble signal for a brief period.
