The pedestrian path between Klages and the Murdock Library and continuing alongside Edwards Hall off of Crisman Crossing will soon be connected!

This area of construction will be closed starting tomorrow (Wednesday) until Tuesday, Sept. 12, while the area is prepared, cement poured and cured. This link shows the red construction fencing layout. (This diagram can only be viewed by George Fox employees and students.)

Interested in further developing your leadership skills? We encourage you to enroll in a new one-credit, pass/no-pass class this fall, Introduction to Multicultural Leadership, taught by D’Metri Mattocks and Dave Johnstone.

Increasingly our campus and our world builds teams which are diverse in perspectives, worldviews and cultures. We want to provide a few tools and prompts to begin developing skills on how to strengthen or be part of such teams.

The class, called LEAD 260 (“Leadership ADVANCE” in the course schedule), will be experiential, conversational, a little experimental, and hopefully fun and engaging. All are welcome. It will meet on Thursdays from noon to 1:15 p.m.

No current leadership role is necessary. No past experience is necessary. There are no prerequisites.

The Office for Spiritual Life is hosting Life Groups this fall (the weeks of Sept. 18 through Nov. 6). These are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together weekly (for eight weeks) for prayer, Bible study and fellowship. Sessions last from 60 to 90 minutes.

We are so excited for our fall semester chapel calendar! The schedule is up on iAttended, and you can check it out for yourself.

If you are an incoming student, make sure you download the iAttended app before school starts. Remember that every student needs to complete 15 chapel credits by the end of each semester. Ten of those credits need to be in Bauman Auditorium at our Tuesday/Thursday chapels, and the other five can be done in chapel or through elective credits.

The Office for Spiritual Life has a program called “SPIL Mentoring,” which provides students an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about faith and life, while receiving ongoing encouragement and support from a George Fox staff or faculty member.

Through this program, you can foster a growing relationship with Christ alongside a trusted mentor. Students in the program will be matched with a dedicated staff or faculty member, with whom they will have weekly meetings lasting approximately one hour, spanning a duration of eight weeks within the semester.

Participants can also receive SPIL credit for joining the program. To sign up, please fill out this form by Thursday, Sept. 14.

Today (Saturday), Mail Services is open between 1 and 4:30 p.m. for you to come pick up your packages. The retail center for outgoing packages will not be open.

As we head into Welcome Weekend, the Newberg/Portland area will see temperatures soar above 90 degrees. As per our heat protocol, please follow these steps:

• Stay hydrated by drinking water every 20 minutes
• Schedule more strenuous work in the cooler parts of the day such as the morning
• If on the Newberg campus, take advantage of cooler buildings such as the Murdock Library, Klages, or Canyon Commons
• Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., check on fellow employees every hour to two hours
• Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

Beginning this semester, the university is no longer offering its own primary medical care. Rather, we are welcoming a new health care model for students in partnership with Providence Medical Group.

The medical care clinic will continue to be co-located with counseling services, but it will be staffed by providers from Providence Health systems. As such, medical care will be accessed through your medical insurance plan similar to when you go to see your own medical care providers at home (with the requisite costs associated with your medical insurance plan such as co-pays and deductibles).

Please note that this change only applies to medical care. Counseling services will continue to be offered to students through George Fox at no additional cost.

We believe students will be well-served by partnering with Providence Medical Group. A couple of anticipated advantages of moving to this model are expanded hours and access to Providence Health system’s expansive network of specialists and medical services.

The new Providence medical services and George Fox counseling services will be housed in the Health and Counseling Center’s current location on campus (Woodward House). We are looking forward to the excellent medical care that Providence will provide and will be communicating details regarding these changes on the Health and Counseling website.

The Hadlock Student Center will have expanded hours for Welcome Weekend to provide students opportunities to engage in recreational activities, including sports and exercise. The rental center will also be open at all times listed below. Make free online reservations by going here.

Interested in science fiction novels, television shows, films, games and more? Then HIST 485: The Past of the Future: A Cultural History of Science Fiction is for you.

In this class, students explore the artifacts of science fiction genre (short stories, novels, pulp fiction, radio shows, film, graphic novels, games, music, and TV shows) and the historical context in which they were produced.

We’ll engage a variety of these throughout the semester with possible SF “artifacts,” including Voltaire’s Micromégas, Shelley’s Frankenstein, Hawthorne’s Rappacini’s Daughter, Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues, H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine, A Trip to the Moon (the first SF movie), comics such as Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, War the the Worlds radio show, Godzilla (original film, 1954), the original Star Trek, David Bowie’s Space Oddity, afrofuturism, and lots more!

Interested in politics, public policy, and civic engagement? PSCI 285/485 Oregon Politics might be for you.

Christine Drazan, former minority leader of the Oregon House of Representatives (2019-21) and Republican candidate for governor (2022), will teach this class aimed at helping students understand and navigate public policy, advocacy, and civic engagement.

She is bringing in guest speakers from across the political spectrum. Students in the class will have the opportunity to meet and talk with state legislators, a campaign manager, a political reporter, a political communications director, a legislative director, a public policy analyst, and more.

The class is offered at both the 200 and 400 levels. Students who take the upper-division version will have more rigorous assignment expectations than those who register for the lower-division option. It meets on Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and is open to students from any major.
