Attend a DMSc graduate research symposium this Thursday

Monday, December 5th, 2022

The university community is invited to a graduate research symposium hosted by the DMSc (Doctor of Medical Science) program from 5 to 7 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 8, in Canyon Commons.

The DMSc program was created in response to an ever-growing demand for healthcare leaders, particularly in rural, traditionally underserved and international locations. Our DMSc students are excited to present their research to you in a symposium-format doctoral defense.

The focus of our students’ research is rooted in service and leadership, particularly with an emphasis on global health and humanitarian service and leadership. As a part of their coursework, our DMSc students participated in a service trip to Africa and the greater Pacific Northwest.

Join us at the symposium to hear about the exciting research our DMSc students have been doing. You will not only have the opportunity to hear about their research. You’re also encouraged to ask questions and interact with our students.

A silent auction will be held during the event and will showcase handmade items from master craftsmen and women throughout Africa.

For more information or to donate to a future DMSc service trip, contact us at padmsc@georgefox.edu.

Congratulations to the ‘Deck the Halls’ competition winners

Sunday, December 4th, 2022

Thank you to all 30-plus departments, offices and teams that participated in our inaugural “Deck the Halls” decoration competition! We hope that each building fills you with joy and the Christmas spirit throughout December.

A few ho-ho-honorable mentions include: the College of Business, the College of Education, the Office for Spiritual Life, History and Politics, the Maker Hub, the Finance Department, and the Office of Student Life.

Now for your 2022 “Deck the Halls” winners, all of whom will receive prizes:

Third Place (“Top Elf on the Shelf” Award): The Advancement Office

This team welcomed us into New York City with an Elf theme. “Santa Reamy” was one of the best Santas of all time. The magic was alive and well as the Christmas Committee navigated to Santa through Gimbels.

Second Place (“Spirit of the Season Award”): The Social Work Department

This office also had an Elf theme. They earned extra points for incorporating their team into the theme as elves in a display on their door. The specific movie details  including a naughty and nice list, Lite-Brites, Elf trivia, and spaghetti cookies, were very impactful. It brought Christmas cheer!

First Place (“St. Nick’s Top Pick”): Student Accounts

If you want to walk through a Hallmark movie home, please visit Student Accounts. The details, including interactive rooms, use of space, and overall creativity, are beyond exciting! They created a cohesive design that brought so much joy!

Congratulations again to all the winners and to all the participants! You are strongly encouraged to check out other departments’ decor this season and celebrate through all the activities on campus this month!

Maker Hub’s ‘Tool Tip Friday’: Scroll Saw

Thursday, December 1st, 2022

The Maker Hub’s Excalibur EX-21 Scroll Saw is a small variable speed electric saw. The thinness of the blade allows it to be turned in the workpiece at an almost-90 degree angle, which allows the blade to track along fine detail and sharp lines. There is a blade guard and a dust blower nozzle that can be adjusted to aid while carving.

Rather than watch a video to see how it works, see it for yourself by coming to the Maker Hub today (Friday) from 4 to 7 p.m. for our Santa’s Workshop event, where you can make Christmas decorations with the scroll saw or foam cutter. You can also make Christmas gifts such as custom socks, aprons, coin rings, and leather-working!

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers!). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.

If your E-bill is missing financial aid, it is likely due to your registration being under the 12 credits required for eligibility (waitlisted classes don’t count). Contact your CAP Coach at careers@georgefox.edu for assistance or contact finaid@georgefox.edu if registration isn’t the issue.

Stay notified of severe winter weather and campus closures

Tuesday, November 29th, 2022

If severe winter weather makes travel to or from classes unsafe, George Fox will announce a temporary campus closure or delayed opening.

The following is our process for announcing when in-person classes are canceled and campus is closed.

  • The provost will make the decision to close campus and cancel in-person classes by 6:30 a.m. for the Newberg campus and Portland Center for daytime classes or 2:15 p.m. for evening classes.
  • Decisions on weekend classes and at the Redmond site will be made by the professor.
  • Remote/online classes will be held even if the campus is closed.
  • If campus has a delayed opening and you question whether a class is still happening, contact your professor for confirmation.
  • If you are unsure whether it is prudent to travel, you should use your personal judgment and make the right decision for yourself regarding coming to work or attending classes.

Major considerations for university closure are road conditions, ice, utility service disruption, and how long the severe weather or emergency is likely to last.

Stay notified! Here’s how to find out if a decision has been made when severe weather occurs:

  • Visit the George Fox Flashalert.net page. This is the first site updated. Enter your email address to create an account and receive notifications from FlashAlert Messenger.
  • If you wish to receive a notification on your mobile device, download the FlashAlert smartphone app for iOS or Android. Either log in or create an account if you haven’t already.
  • Listen to local radio and television stations or visit their websites (this info comes via Flashalert).
  • Call the George Fox University switchboard at 503-538-8383.

More information on campus closure policies can be found at georgefox.edu/closure.
