View the ‘Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom’ film tomorrow with the documentarian

Sunday, October 29th, 2023

After a screening of the film, Berry will stick around for a Q&A session, in partnership with students in the Black Student Union. The film is sponsored by Our Daily Bread: Voices.

About the film: “A black man is troubled by the legacy of American slavery and the misuse of Christianity to justify it. He travels throughout Texas and discovers how the Juneteenth holiday reveals the hope and courage that empowered the formerly enslaved and their descendants to fight for freedom in an often unjust society.”

Synopsis: When estranged son, James, returns for his father’s funeral, the Callifer family finds their staunch unbelief turned upside down as secrets from the past disrupt the present. Unearthing lost childhood, James is confronted by the best and worst of his family history, leading him inexorably toward the startling truth.

What happened in the potting shed all those years ago? And why has it led the Callifers to reject their youngest son? Is there room for belief in a family of skeptics? Legendary novelist Graham Greene addresses these questions and more a taut, engrossing drama, described by the New York Daily News as “an intellectual detective story.”
