Participate in group fitness research study

The exercise science department is recruiting individuals over the age of 55 who are not regularly involved in group exercise in order to obtain data for a senior research project. It is a four-week-long commitment.

Plan to attend Diversity Dialogue on April 9

The BSW program and the School of Social Work invite you to our spring Diversity Dialogue, “Trauma and Hate: From Micro-Aggression to Genocide,” on Thursday, April 9, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the grand ballroom of the Chehalem Cultural Center.

Joining us will be Randy Blazak, whose scholarship on hate crime and hate groups has made him a regular commentator in media outlets from NPR and CNN to BBC and Al Jazeera. He works with the National Institute of Justice and the Southern Poverty Law Center on hate crime research issues.

We invite members of our George Fox community to participate as a network of individuals committed to supporting diversity and increasing awareness about hate crimes and their impact.

Volunteer for PT practice screening

The School of Physical Therapy is looking for volunteers with a complicated medical history to participate in a practice screening session on Monday, March 2, from 9 to 9:45 a.m. in the auditorium at Friendsview.

In this session, our second-year DPT students will practice interviewing volunteers on their medical history paperwork and medication list.

Civil rights activist Dolores Huerta speaks on March 8

Join us for a special guest appearance by Dolores Huerta, the woman who cofounded the National Farm Workers Association with César Chávez in the early 1960s and who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama in 2012.

Huerta will give a presentation on Sunday, March 8, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Huerta has worked for labor rights and social justice for more than 50 years. This lecture will provide an inside look at the farm worker movement and its historical ramifications for today. She will speak to what the movement was all about and her role in it, and address what activism is and how it can effect change.

Accounting department offers tax preparation help

The accounting department is offering free tax preparation and e-filing assistance to the George Fox community. Four sessions will be offered – two each month in March and April:

  • Saturday, March 7 – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m
  • Thursday, March 19 – 4:30 to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 4 – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 9 – 4:30 to 9 p.m.

All sessions will meet in Hoover 210 and are on a first-come, first-served basis. To e-file a joint return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.

Those seeking assistance are to bring photo identification, Social Security cards or individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, birthdates for family members, the current year’s tax package (if you received one), and all appropriate tax forms.

If applicable, it is also advised that you bring a list of medical, taxes, interest, contributions and miscellaneous expenses; child and disabled dependent care information; bank routing and account numbers; health insurance coverage documentation; and a copy of their 2018 federal and state returns.

Join paint night fundraiser to support nursing serve trip

Athletics wins food and clothing drive competition

The Bruin Community Pantry’s food and clothing drive competition was a huge success. Eight teams participated in the competition, and 2,436.7 pounds of food and 1,055 pieces of clothing were donated. Here are the totals:

Gather for Spring Faculty Lecture and Scholars Symposium

All are invited to the Spring 2020 Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. Our featured speaker, and recipient of the 2018-19 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship, is Leah Payne, assistant professor of theology. 

Payne is a historian of Christianity in America, and her analysis of religion, politics and popular culture has appeared in The Washington Post and Christianity Today. Join us as she explores “the contemporary Christian” and how evangelicals in the United States were shaped by the entertainment business of the late 20th century.

Come early, between 5 and 6 p.m., and check out the work of our Richter Student Scholars and Steinfeldt Peace Scholars at a symposium in the Hoover lobby. George Fox students will present their research projects in a conversational poster format. Refreshments will be served.

Join whitewater rafting trip
