Campus Public Safety Update: Vehicles left on campus during summer break

Thursday, April 1st, 2021

Please note: Campus Public Safety normally doesn’t allow vehicles to remain on campus during the summer if the owner isn’t currently taking classes.

Exceptions to this policy are as follows:

  • Student is on Juniors Abroad or winter/summer serve trip
  • Student lives too far away to easily drive home
  • International students who purchase vehicles here and return home for breaks
  • Students on official George Fox activities (sports activities/academic trips, etc.)

If a student falls within those categories, they may fill out the Vehicles Left on Campus Policy Form, agreeing to the requirements. This form must be completed before you leave campus, and you must leave a key with Campus Public Safety before leaving your vehicle on campus.

Any vehicle left on campus without the key being left with security is subject to tow at your expense due to Plant Services/construction activity all around campus during the summer.

For all other students, it is recommended to leave your car off-campus with a friend who can drive it and watch it, as George Fox is not responsible for any theft or damage to your vehicle while left unattended on campus.

Do not abandon your car on city streets, as the city of Newberg will tow it as an “abandoned vehicle” after 72 hours.

Questions? Call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 or email Elrike Shaw (eshaw@georgefox.edu).

Reminder from Campus Public Safety to lock your bikes

Thursday, April 1st, 2021

Campus Public Safety has noticed a lot of bikes scattered across campus recently. Please remember to lock your bike to a bike rack with a heavy-duty lock and chain. Leaving bikes in random places creates a temptation for thieves to try to steal your bikes.

At the end of the spring semester, a university-wide bicycle cleanup will be done. Bicycles that are illegally parked, unregistered or inoperable will be impounded, as bicycle racks will need to be cleared to do routine maintenance to the bicycle racks and surrounding areas.

Students using their bikes during the summer are encouraged to move their bikes inside to store them in their summer housing.

Bicycles not picked up from the impound lot within 60 days will be forwarded to local charities at the discretion of the Campus Public Safety office. Junk bicycles will be recycled.

Questions? Call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 or email Elrike Shaw (eshaw@georgefox.edu).

Volunteers 60 to 90 years old needed for participation in PT study

Thursday, April 1st, 2021

We are interested in the use of telehealth as a way to screen for frailty in community-dwelling older adults using the modified Physical Performance Test. The study will be taking place Monday, April 5, at 3:30 p.m. in the Roberts Center.

In order to qualify for this study, you must:

  • Be 60-90 years old
  • Live independently or in an assisted living facility
  • Be able to walk without the help of another person
  • Pass a mental status exam

In order to qualify for this study, you must not:

  • Have been diagnosed with a neurological condition
  • Have a current illness or health issues that would make performing physical activities unsafe

If you qualify for this study, you may be asked to come to campus, where you will be asked to perform a physical performance test both in a lab setting and a telehealth setting.

Cameras will record the movement of markers that will be placed on your body, and force plates in the ground will record your foot contact during the sit-to-stand activity in the lab. Your performance during the telehealth activities will be recorded.

The testing session will last approximately one hour. If interested, please contact research staff member Lyndsay Stutzenberger (lstutzenberger@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2463).

Wellness Wednesday Tip: Connect with others!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2021

Did you know that loneliness is linked to an increased risk of chronic disease? Harvard researchers found that loneliness and/or social isolation were associated with a 29% increased risk of heart attack and 32% greater risk of stroke. This risk level is similar to that of light smoking or obesity, according to the researchers.

During this time of social distancing, it is important to find safe ways to stay connected and maintain our social support networks. So take care of yourself by picking up the phone and calling a family member or going for a walk with a friend!
