Join Mathetes’ ESL discussion on Oct. 7

Monday, September 27th, 2021

Come to our Mathetes panel from 7 to 8:30 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 7, in Hoover 102.

Mathetes is a safe conversational space in which students and faculty can engage with each other and learn from the experience of others in their Fox community. Our hope for this panel is that we can confront the myth that every person who is involved in higher education has the same educational experience.

This Mathetes event will unpack the experience of individuals who are English-learners (ESL), or who have experience in the language-learning environment. We hope to see you there!

Cookies and coffee will also be provided.

If you have any questions, contact Victoria Prieto (vprieto17@georgefox.edu).

Safety and security tip: Secure your living area and don’t leave valuables in your car

Friday, September 24th, 2021

Here’s a quick reminder for your safety and security. There are still some warm days ahead, and we understand some people like to open windows and prop doors for better airflow. We would ask that you remember to secure your area if you are not around and make sure the doors are not propped open. Leaving windows open or doors propped is a safety and security concern.

Remember, please secure your valuables and don’t leave valuables in your car, unlocked room, or in general just lying around. If something seems out of place or you have a concern, feel free to call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090. We have 24/7 officers are on duty.

Thank you and enjoy your weekend!

Check out Maker Hub’s ‘Tool Tip Friday’

Thursday, September 23rd, 2021

Did you know that the Maker Hub has a handheld wood CNC router? This machine from Shaper Origin can engrave wooden signs, cut inlays, and makes cutting dovetail joints a breeze. Check out this video that shows the process of making a trivet with the same Shaper Origin CNC router we have in the Maker Hub.

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the whole George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers!). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.

All invited to civil discourse with Braver Angels on Oct. 5

Thursday, September 23rd, 2021

Oregon’s co-coordinators for Braver Angels, a national group promoting civil conversation and cooperation across political divides, will describe their work in a special presentation on campus Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The free event is open to the public and is set from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. The evening will feature Elise Keith and Ben Nanke, who co-coordinate the Oregon chapter’s work, Elise as a “Blue” and Ben as a “Red.”

More information on the Oct. 5 event and the George Fox Civility Project is available at this link, or by contacting Civility Project Director Ron Mock at rmock@georgefox.edu. You can also read about the Braver Angels at this link.

A Zoom link to the event will be available soon. You will be able to find it on the Civility Project website.

Braver Angels (BA) is one of the leading national organizations working to overcome America’s historically high levels of political polarization and alienation. Their events allow conservatives and liberals to get past destructive stereotypes so “we can have civil conversations about real issues that lead to productive problem-solving,” according to the BA website.
