Wellness Wednesday: Focus on eye health

Tuesday, August 26th, 2025

Good vision is essential for your overall well-being, supporting cognitive function, mental clarity, and even physical comfort. Clear eyesight helps reduce strain, improve focus, and maintain good posture, preventing headaches and muscle tension. It also keeps the brain engaged, strengthening neural connections and promoting long-term cognitive health.

Do you spend hours in front of a computer, phone, or TV? Give your eyes a break and protect them from digital strain with the simple and effective 20-20-20 rule. All you have to do is look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. See more tips for better eye health here.

Need to access your Providence vision plan? Here is your resource. By taking care of your eyes, you’re not just protecting your sight – you’re investing in your overall health and well-being.

Some great local deals are available on new Bruin Discounts page

Sunday, August 24th, 2025

We’re excited to announce that the Bruin Discounts webpage is now live!

Bruin Discounts is a program where local businesses generously offer exclusive discounts to members of the George Fox community. These offers are our way of saying thank you to you – and a way for us to support and strengthen our ties with Newberg’s local businesses.

Letters were sent to businesses a few weeks ago, and we are still receiving replies; those will be added as they come in. You can now view available discounts here.

Following are the policies for using Bruin Discounts:

  • Only one use per visit is allowed.
  • Discounts cannot be combined with other sales or promotions.
  • You must present your George Fox ID card to redeem the discount.
  • The employee or student must be present at the time of purchase.
  • Spouses or family members may not redeem the discount on their own.

We encourage you to frequent and thank these local businesses for their generosity and for supporting our George Fox community.

Do you know of a business that would like to join? They can submit their offer using this form.

Thank you for being part of the George Fox community and helping us build strong local relationships!

Take precautions with this week’s high temperatures

Sunday, August 24th, 2025

Are you ready for the heat this week? This week will continue under the heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service for our area. We expect temperatures to remain in the mid to high 90s. Your safety is our top priority, so let’s make sure we’re all prepared.

To help everyone stay cool and healthy, please follow the university’s heat protocol:

  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Drink water every 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Time Your Tasks Wisely. Schedule more strenuous work for the cooler parts of the day, like the morning.
  • Seek Out the AC. If your building feels too warm, head to an air-conditioned space such as Canyon Commons, Klages, or Murdock Library.
  • Look Out for Each Other. Between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., check on your fellow employees and classmates every hour or two. A quick check-in can make a big difference!
  • Know the Symptoms. Familiarize yourself with the signs of heat-related illnesses. You can find more information here.

Got questions about staying safe in the heat? Don’t hesitate to reach out! Contact Kim Knoernschild, our environmental health and safety specialist, at kknoernschild@georgefox.edu.

Stay cool, stay safe, and have a great week!

Be sure to review the Student Handbook as a new academic year begins

Thursday, August 21st, 2025

Whether you’re a new or returning student, living on campus or commuting, we encourage you to take some time to review the Student Handbook.

The handbook is an important resource that outlines the lifestyle standards, community policies, and other aspects of the George Fox community. The expectations within it help our community function in a way that reflects our Christ-centered mission.

You are responsible for reviewing and following all university policies. We hope you find this searchable handbook to be a helpful and informative tool. Be sure to check the section titled Policy Updates near the beginning to see what’s changed for the current academic year.

If you have any questions, please contact Mark Pothoff at mpothoff@georgefox.edu or Jere Witherspoon at jwithers@georgefox.edu in the student life office.

Please make note of these parking instructions for Welcome Weekend

Tuesday, August 19th, 2025

Welcome Weekend is almost here! In order for our hundreds of new students to have a seamless move-in experience, we need extra cooperation from the staff, faculty and students already here tonight (Wednesday) through this Friday, Aug. 22.

  • Staff and faculty: Please plan to park along the street or in the Bauman or Morse lots on Friday.
  • Students: If your on-campus residence is Pennington, Edwards, Weesner Village, Hobson, Macy, Sutton, Le Shana, Gulley, Brandt or Newlin Hall, we need you to vacate the lots associated with these locations tonight and stay out of them on Friday Aug. 22.
  • If you normally park in the Le Shana or Newlin Hall lots, please move your cars as close to Fulton Street as possible so that the areas in front of the buildings remain clear. You can also move your vehicles to the Bauman or Morse lots on Thursday evening.
  • Everyone in the Pennington lot, lollipop area, Edwards or Weesner Village needs to move to the Bauman lot tonight. Please keep Sheridan Street clear for easier access for our incoming students.
  • The lot in between the Roberts Center, Gulley and Brandt Halls must be vacated tonight as well. The Morse lot is also available for Friday.

Questions? Please contact Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 and view this parking brochure on the CPS website for lot locations. Thank you in advance for your cooperation to help make move-in day the best day ever for our new students!
