Wellness Wednesday: Gut-Brain Axis

Tuesday, March 31st, 2026

Did you know that your gut and brain talk to each other all day long? You might not know it, but your gut does more than digest food. It plays a huge role in how you think, feel, sleep, and manage stress.

The gut and brain are connected through the gut-brain axis. It’s a network that sends signals back and forth. When it’s working smoothly, you’re more likely to feel clear-headed, energized, and in a good mood. When they fall out of sync, you might notice things like an upset stomach, low energy, and trouble focusing.

Check out some simple habits below and in this flier that can help keep your gut and brain working like a team!

  • The 60-Second Reset: Take a few deep belly breaths before you eat. This signals your brain to move from “stress” to “digest,” helping you avoid the afternoon slump.
  • Screen-Free Fueling: Try eating your lunch away from your laptop. Just 15 minutes of focused eating helps you absorb nutrients better and prevents brain fog.
  • The “Fiber First” Rule: Eat your salad or nuts before the rest of your meal. This simple order stabilizes your energy so you don’t crash at 3 p.m.
  • Morning Light: Get five minutes of sunlight shortly after you wake up. It sets your internal clock, which improves your digestion and mental clarity all day.

Submit Fox360 alerts for traditional undergraduates

Tuesday, March 31st, 2026

This time of the semester can be difficult for students as the excitement of a new term wanes, exams and assignments pile up, and the demands of college take a toll on physical and mental health

If you have concerns about a traditional undergraduate student, log into Fox360 to submit an alert for the student.

You can submit alerts for concerns in the following areas:

  • Academic – Missing multiple classes or consistently poor academic performance
  • Behavioral – Concerning or disruptive behaviors in or outside of class; frequent absence from scheduled work shifts
  • Emotional – Mental health concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety), unusual emotional expression, or suicidal ideation
  • Physical – Medical concerns; extreme changes in grooming or personal care
  • Social – Personal, social, or family concerns that are affecting well-being and performance

A few notes about alerts:

  • If a student is enrolled in your course but hasn’t attended class or engaged in George Fox online activity, submit an alert.
  • Student employee supervisors and other non-faculty are invited to submit alerts for the reasons above.

The Student Support Network will assign a “case manager” to follow up with students. Case managers will do our best to give updates to faculty and employees who submit alerts or provide feedback. You are welcome to contact Jere Witherspoon at jwithers@georgefox.edu to inquire about the status of a student.

This Fox360 Quick Guide provides a visual overview of the Fox360 system. More details about using Fox360 are available in this Google Doc.

Concerns about graduate and AOD students should be communicated to department chairs.

If you have questions or would like more information regarding Fox360, contact Rick Muthiah at rmuthiah@georgefox.edu.

Student Support Network members:

  • Angeleen Umfleet – Student Care and George Fox Digital
  • Crystal McGowen – Assistant Director of Inclusive Excellence

Learn from one of the country’s top retail executives and the former CEO of Starbucks

Monday, March 30th, 2026

Join us at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, to hear from Jim Donald, former CEO of Starbucks, as he shares his insights on leading through change.

Donald will move beyond business theory to discuss the human element in a conversation he calls, “What They Don’t Teach You in Business School: Real-World Leadership for the Future.” This free event in Canyon Commons offers a masterclass in the human element of industry.

Donald will provide the “missing link” between classroom theory and the grit of “front-line” leadership – lessons he learned directly from legendary figures like Sam Walton, founder of Walmart. He will deep dive into an “old-school” playbook that validates the daily professional challenges of the modern age through the lens of a servant-leadership model.

Donald is a world-class executive and “Turnaround King” with a storied 50-year career in the retail and service industries. Recognized by the Best Practice Institute as one of the “Top 25 CEOs in the World,” he has held the top leadership mantle at some of the most recognizable brands in the world, including Starbucks, Albertsons, and Extended Stay Hotels.

Share how you implement uniquely Quaker approaches to instruction within higher education

Monday, March 30th, 2026

Are you interested in or working on a topic related to Quaker pedagogy? This year’s Friends Association for Higher Education conference, to be held June 8-11 at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa, invites presenters from across the academic disciplines to consider whether there is a uniquely Quaker approach to higher education that offers value to the wider body of academia.

Under this umbrella, presenters are encouraged to share the research and work they do with students that undergirds this sense of a uniquely Quaker approach to the instruction within higher education.

The full call with additional background and guiding queries is available at this link. If you have any questions, contact Jay Miller, George Fox’s representative to FAHE, at jaym@georgefox.edu.

Reserve complimentary seats for Cornel West and Robert George’s talk on civic friendship April 16

Sunday, March 29th, 2026

What does it look like when two of America’s most brilliant and outspoken minds — one a conservative lion of natural law theory, the other a prophetic voice of the Black radical tradition — sit down not as opponents, but as brothers in Christ?

On Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m., the university invites you to “Civic Friendship in a Polarized Age,” a rare and remarkable dialogue between Princeton’s Robert George and Union Seminary’s Cornel West.

Students have the option of receiving elective chapel credit for attending the event. Seating is limited inside Canyon Commons, so reserve your spot here.

Rooted not in the tired theater of political debate but in a shared Christian faith that calls all people to love their neighbors across every divide, this conversation will explore what genuine civic friendship demands of us in this fractured moment. Come expecting not a clash, but a covenant — a living demonstration that the gospel has always been, at its heart, a politics of reconciliation.
