Come cheer on our women’s basketball team, ranked No. 8 in the nation, as we take on Greenville in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament! The Bruins tip off at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

We will host a viewing party in the Hadlock Student Center lobby for those who wish to cheer on the Bruins together. It begins at 2:45 p.m. and lasts until about 5 p.m. A popcorn bar is included.

If George Fox wins Friday, the Bruins will play again Saturday at 5 p.m. against the winner of Friday’s Washington University/UW-Whitewater game. In that event, a viewing party will take place in the same Hadlock location from 4:45 to 7 p.m. A nacho bar will be included for that game.

Do you want to learn how to unleash your inner Tony Stark?

The George Fox University’s Maker’s Club is launching a pilot program designed to bring creative students from across campus into the Maker Hub. This cohort of students will gain hands-on skills such as CAD modeling, 3D printing, and coding, as well as experience in interdisciplinary innovation and entrepreneurship. Everyone is welcome, but there is limited space, so fill out this Google form to register.

The Maker’s Club is a new club on campus dedicated to unleashing the creative potential among the students at George Fox and arming them with the tools necessary to bring their ideas to life. Our ultimate goal is to bring George Fox’s future innovators into one place so they can learn from one another and create together.

The Hadlock Student Center is hosting another Family Day on Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are excited to share this space with George Fox employees and their immediate family members!

If you plan to attend, please note:

• Sandals and other open-toe shoes are not permitted.
• Non-marking athletic shoes are required in the gym and fitness center rooms.
• Children under the age of 14 are allowed in all areas of the HSC except the cardio/weight area.
• Family members aged 14 to 17 can use the cardio/weight equipment when directly supervised by a parent or guardian.

Please take a few minutes in advance to complete the waiver on MyGFU for yourself (if you haven’t done so already) and a separate form for each family member who will be attending.

The School of Physical Therapy is excited to host Dr. Patricia L. Scheets, director of quality and clinical outcomes for Infinity Rehab, tonight (Wednesday) in Hoover 105 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Scheets will present the topic “What’s the Big Deal About the Movement System?” The purpose of this lecture is to provide insight to the most recent work related to the movement system, particularly the work of Dr. Scheets and of the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy.

Everyone is encouraged to attend this free event. Light refreshments will be served.

The Nutrition Matters Grant at George Fox is sponsoring another cooking demonstration. If you would like to learn how to make a healthy 30-minute meal, join us in Canyon Commons tonight (Wednesday) from 5 to 6 p.m.

Emily Forbes, a George Fox alumna and local nutritionist, is passionate about helping students learn to make healthy meals. You will walk away with a sample, knowledge of how to make a dish, and the recipe. It’s like watching a cooking show, but you actually get to taste the food!

The School of Physical Therapy is looking for volunteers with a complicated medical history to participate in a practice screening session tomorrow (Wednesday) from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Roberts Center.

Join the College of Business’ visiting scholar, David Rawson, this Friday, March 1, from 5 to 9 p.m., when he will be signing copies of his new book, Prelude to Genocide, at Chapters Books and Coffee (701 E. 1st St.).

In Prelude to Genocide, Rawson draws on declassified documents and his own experiences as a United States ambassador to Mali and Rwanda to seek out what went wrong in the events leading up to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which 800,000 lives were lost. It poses the question, “What lessons might be learned from the failure of diplomacy in this historic tragedy?”

The Business Bridge is hosting our first speaker event of the semester! Drew Force will be joining us tonight (Tuesday) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Stevens 207. Come for an evening of discussion with free Chipotle food.

For nearly 20 years, Drew managed and led Riley Weiss, a brand consulting and design firm based in Portland. He has worked in brand development, messaging, advertising and graphic design for 30 years.

Currently, Drew runs Force Brand Design, based in Dundee, where his clients include adidas and several companies in financial services and manufacturing.

Faculty advisors: Registration for summer online courses is now open! For nearly a decade, these courses have proven to be a good way to help your advisees make progress toward graduation. Please let them know the following.

Registration is now open for undergraduate students. Class sections are limited to 20 students each, and they fill up fast. Excellent general education options in BIBL, CHEM, RELI, MATH, HUMA, MUSI, PHYS, ACCT, and more are available.

The courses run for eight weeks for full credit, and the fee is 50 percent off normal tuition. In some cases, a student’s financial aid package can be used to cover the cost; they should check with Financial Aid for details.

The courses are all taught by experienced, devoted faculty members with a track record of success in online teaching. If students have questions about the applicability of a particular class to their degree requirements, they can contact their CAP Coach for more information.

All are invited to the 2019 Spring Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, March 5, at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. 

Nijay Gupta’s lecture, “People of Faith: Why the First Christians Called Themselves ‘Believers,'” will focus on why followers of Jesus adopted the label “believers” in reference to their identity, and even referred to their religion as “the faith.” What significance did this pose for them? Was it primarily about “beliefs,” or something more? Gupta will explore these important historical questions and also address the relevance this discussion has for Christian identity today.

Gupta is the recipient of the 2017-18 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship and an associate professor of New Testament at Portland Seminary. 

Come early, between 5 and 6 p.m., and check out the work of our Richter Student Scholars and Steinfeldt Peace Scholars at a symposium in the Hoover lobby. Students will present their research and peace projects in a conversational poster format. Refreshments will be served.
