Get involved in Weigh the Waste Week

Sunday, October 13th, 2019

Up to 40 percent of food in the United States is never eaten. At the same time, one in eight Americans struggles to put enough food on the table. Research shows that 40 percent of all college students in a 30-day period did not have access to enough food.

What can you do to alleviate this problem? Join George Fox University’s effort to address both problems during Weigh the Waste Week!

Today (Monday) we will be collecting all the food waste from lunch to determine how much food is wasted. Volunteer to help collect the food waste.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) get the results and make the pledge to take only what you eat and have a clean plate by the end of your meal. Sign the pledge by writing your name on a paper plate. These paper plates will be displayed on a wall in the dining room.

Everyone who signs the pledge will be entered into a random drawing to win a $50 gift card to Grocery Outlet, so please write your name clearly.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, all are welcome to visit local Farm to Fork vendor Mustard Seed Organics at 2 p.m. This Thursday, Oct. 17, there will be more chances to sign the pledge and learn about food waste.

On Friday, Oct. 18, we will be collecting all the food waste from lunch. If we can show a 30 percent reduction in food waste from Monday’s lunch, Bon Appetit will donate an entire pallet of oatmeal to the Bruin Community Pantry! Volunteers are needed to help collect food waste for this event as well.

If you are interested in volunteering for any of these events or would like to join us on the farm tour, contact Shannon Tivona at shannon.tivona@cafebonappetit.com.
