Good morning, campers! On Saturday, March 9, the George Fox climbing wall will be hosting its annual spring boulder competition. This year, the theme is “summer camp.” Your camp color will be randomly assigned when you register.

This will be an individual-based competition during the session you sign up for. We will also have opportunities to compete in games with a team during other sessions. Sessions will begin every two hours starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the last session beginning at 4 p.m.

This competition is open for students and employees of all skill and experience levels. Routes are set specifically for each skill category. Registration is completely free, but will increase to $5 on Sunday, March 3. Register on IM Leagues now!

The climbing wall is hosting a fundraiser selling hot dogs on the quad to support the upcoming Camp Rock Bouldering Competition and to raise money for Seattle Children’s Hospital. Hot dogs will be available this Friday, March 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What does it mean to be human? This year’s Dalton Lecture explores the question from both scientific and biblical perspectives, with an emphasis on awe. The lecture will identify shared values in both the scientific and spiritual approaches to exploring human distinctiveness.

Join us on Thursday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium for the lecture, “Stardust & Wonder,” with Dr. Praveen Sethupathy, chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Cornell University.

Dr. Sethupathy will include concepts from science and genomics that invite the audience to marvel at who we are and how it relates to our calling as image bearers of God.

The public is welcome, and admission is free. A George Fox Student Research Symposium and cookie reception will follow.

There will be an additional science lecture on pediatric cancer from Dr. Sethupathy on Thursday, March 14, at 3 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

The 2024 Collegiate Day of Prayer is coming up on Thursday, Feb. 29. The Office of Parent and Family Programs and the George Fox Prayer Network invite you to join us in a day devoted to prayer for the students, faculty and administration of George Fox.

We also welcome our families and George Fox community to take time during this day to pray from your homes or work as you feel led.

Throughout the day you can look to our social media outlets (George Fox University Parents on Facebook or @georgefoxfamily on Instagram) for prayer direction. Our campus pastoral team also created this special Liturgy of Prayer page as another resource to help guide you as you pray.

This is a virtual event, but on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 29, the George Fox Prayer Network also invites anyone to join an in-person prayer time at 6:30 p.m. in Stevens 207. This is a student-led event.

Austin Smith, a doctoral candidate in Baylor University’s Higher Education Studies and Leadership program, is looking for faculty members to participate in a research study about campus traditions and their relation to culture at Christian colleges and universities. 

For this study, Austin will be coming to our campus Feb. 27 to March 1 to conduct voluntary interviews with faculty and staff as well hold focus groups with students. 

Participation is open to any faculty member who has been at the institution for at least three full academic years and will consist of an interview that should last approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

The Lewis and Tolkien Student Society invites you to join us for guest lecturer Jonathan Kirkpatrick’s talk on “Bacchus in Narnia: C.S. Lewis and the Greek and Roman Classics” on Monday, March 4, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in EHS 102.

In his lecture, Dr. Kirkpatrick will be asking why Bacchus (the god of wine) appears in Prince Caspian, and why he was such a significant deity to Lewis.

Through this, he’ll look at how Lewis’s love of literature and mythology played an important and surprising role in his religious conversion as well as his books. Dr. Kirkpatrick has lived in Oxford for many years, where he works as principal lecturer for SCIO (Scholarship and Christianity in Oxford), hosting numerous American students studying abroad in the city.

Dr. Kirkpatrick is a classicist, with a particular interest in the religious landscape of Roman Palestine and the classical background of C.S. Lewis’s life and writings. He has spent two seasons of his life living in Lewis’s former home, The Kilns, first as a scholar in residence and later as the warden.

Dinner and refreshments will be provided. We look forward to learning with you!

Tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m., join us for a faculty concert featuring original music by Olivia Pothoff and featuring Dwayne Corbin on drums, Aaron Barnhart on bass, and Ausdin Lemmons on guitar, as well as other guests. Midterm grades provide an accurate picture of students’ academic progress so far this semester. Please be sure to enter midterm grades between Feb. 24 and 28, 2024.

The last day to withdraw from a class in which a student may be struggling without a graded responsibility is Sunday, March 17. If they choose to withdraw from a class, their transcript will show a “W.” If they do not withdraw and receive an F in the course, their GPA will suffer.

Let students know to check their grades in Canvas; they must log in to the Dashboard. On the right-hand side of the screen is a button titled “VIEW GRADES.” Here is a link to the Canvas Dashboard.

Encourage students who received a D or an F on their midterms to contact their CAP coach as soon as possible to discuss the consequences of withdrawing from a class. If a student withdraws from a class, they should also contact their CAP coach to discuss their class schedule for future semesters.

The Guerras are singer-songwriters based out of Austin, Texas. Jon describes his style as “devotional music,” a term he coined to refer to his musical style, as “less Sunday morning worship music, and more Monday morning prayer music.” His 2023 album, Ordinary Ways, was critically acclaimed and won Best Album of The Year at the Gospel Coalition’s yearly round-up.
