Creation Care Committee taking inventory on who teaches environmental science

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Do you teach anything about environmental science, ecology, creation care, sustainability in any of your courses? Or perhaps you teach an entire course dedicated to one of these topics?

The Creation Care Committee wants to know about it. Please let us know even if you just teach on such a topic one day out of the entire course. We are trying to get an inventory of where creation care and the environment are being taught in our curriculum. Also, let us know if you are hoping to teach on such matters or would like to in the future. Please respond to Corey Beals at cbeals@georgefox.edu with your response.

HR seeking nominations for Employee of the Month Award

Monday, September 7th, 2009

With the academic year now underway, Employee of the Month Awards will resume. This year’s winners will be selected from nominations from coworkers and other colleagues. Support staff and administrators from all sites are eligible to receive this award once each year. Monthly winners will be announced at the all-employee meetings and each will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Jory Restaurant at the new Allison Inn & Spa in Newberg.

Please send an e-mail to Peggy Kilburg (Human Resources) if you would like to nominate a support staff member or administrator for Employee of the Month. Your e-mail should include the person’s name, job title, a concise but specific summary of this person’s contribution(s) to the university, its students, and/or its employees in the past 30 days or so (what was done, who was impacted, etc.) and any other information that you believe makes this person deserving of this award.

Please submit your nomination by Friday, Sept. 18. The president’s Executive Leadership Team will then select the Employee(s) of the Month from the nominations submitted. The winner(s) will be announced at the all-employee meeting on Thursday, Sept 24.

Provost Allen speaks on classroom practices at Faculty Teaching Forum Sept. 10

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Provost Patrick Allen will lead a Faculty Teaching Forum titled “Classroom Practices: Three Paths to Better Teaching” from noon to 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Cap and Gown Room A (note different location than on academic calendar).

The session will review three “oldies, but goodies” in classroom practice: “Desirable Difficulties,” “Spacing” and “Metacognitive Monitoring,” and discuss how they can assist student learning. A recent Chronicle article suggests that they many not always be appropriate, so we will put our heads together and discuss when and where they work – and when they don’t. Inexperienced and experienced teachers invited!

To reserve a lunch, e-mail Jere Witherspoon (jwithers@georgefox.edu) by 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Everyone is welcome to attend the session, whether bringing a lunch or reserving a lunch. Please have your lunch ready so we can begin the conversation at noon.

All faculty — full time, part time, and adjunct — are invited to attend Faculty Teaching Forums (FTFs). Video podcasts of FTFs will be available on iTunesU.
