Maker Hub’s ‘Tool Tip Friday’: Plasma Cutter

You can’t cut steel with safety scissors, but you can use a plasma cutter! The Maker Hub’s Miller Plasma Cutter is a useful and time-saving tool. It uses a plasma arc and compressed air to cut through electrically conductive metals such as steel and aluminum.

This machine will cut up to 7/8 inches of mild steel at 10 inches per minute, and can roughly sever up to 1-1/4 inches of plate. The torch is hand controlled so you can cut a variety of designs, either using a straight edge or another material as a guide.

For more information, check out the Maker Hub’s Wiki Page post about the plasma cutter. You can also check out this video to learn how it works!

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community, including non-engineers! We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.
