Explore the virtues of empathy, humility and gratitude in navigating disagreement

Thursday, April 3rd, 2025

Come explore with Mark and Lisa McMinn how their latest book, An Invitation to Slow, adds to our understanding of civility and the role civility plays in building a good life. The session will be in EHS 102 starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 10.

The McMinns, both longtime members of the George Fox University faculty, highlight the virtues of empathy, humility and gratitude (among others) as keys to a healthy, satisfying and productive life. They will explore with George Fox Civility Project director Ron Mock what those virtues offer communities working to treat their disagreements as gifts for community betterment.

Vote with food at Armstrong House to support the Bruin Community Pantry!

Thursday, April 3rd, 2025

Recently, the Bruin Community Pantry has found itself low on food, and we in the English department want to support the pantry and all George Fox students by holding a food drive today (Friday) and next week, April 7-11, at Armstrong House. These are the most needed items:

  • Soups
  • Chili
  • Canned meat
  • Boxed or canned meals like rice or pasta
  • Canned fruit

If you’d like to support this effort, we’ve got some literary incentive for you, too. Each day next week, we’ll have a poll for you to vote on with the food you bring. Here’s how it works: two boxes, two categories, and your voter’s freedom.

These are the categories:

  • Friday, April 4: Harry Potter vs. The Lord of the Rings
  • Monday, April 7: Audiobook vs. physical book
  • Tuesday, April 8: Austen vs. Brontë
  • Wednesday, April 9: Poem vs. novel
  • Thursday, April 10: Inklings vs. everyone else
  • Friday, April 11: Reading vs. TikTok

Have strong feelings? Make your voice heard (and food eaten) by stopping by Armstrong next week to vote and support our pantry. We’ll release the winners at the end of next week, so be sure to put your eggs (and other foodstuffs) in the right basket.

If you have questions, please contact Melanie Springer Mock, professor of English, at mmock@georgefox.edu.

Nourishing News: Tips on making the most of the food you buy

Thursday, April 3rd, 2025

The cost of groceries keeps going up, putting a strain on family budgets and creating stress right along with it. It’s easy to feel powerless and discouraged these days.

The good news: You can actually do a lot to help yourself. Check out these tips on how to make the most of the food you buy.

  • One of the trickiest parts of grocery shopping is choosing produce. Learn how to tell if a fruit or vegetable is ripe and discover other ways to get optimal value from your produce.
  • Reducing food waste isn’t just about cleaning your plate; it’s about making food last as long as possible. Learn how to eat fresh and waste less by starting with common foods like apples, berries, cheese, nuts, flour and whole grains.

Want to learn more about sustainable eating practices? The Wellness Committee invites you to explore a variety of online resources from Cafe Bon Appetit and savethefood.com. You’ll learn how to incorporate global flavors into your meal and turn your plate into a colorful palette of nutrients – and you’ll discover a dinner party calculator that will allow you to create the perfect menu.

Want to do something to benefit our schools? Support the Bright Futures Initiative, a campus-wide school supplies drive supporting local elementary school students and teachers affected by budget cuts. Our mission is to provide essential tools for learning and to foster community unity through generosity.

How you can help:

  • Drop off school supplies in donation bins located in the library, residence halls, student center, and other high-traffic areas across campus
  • Spread the word by sharing on social media and encouraging friends to participate

Our goal is to collect 200 backpacks, 500 notebooks and more essential supplies. The drive runs from now through Friday, April 11.

Let’s come together to make a real impact—one pencil, one notebook, one backpack at a time.

Questions or want to volunteer? Contact Lana Davis at ldavis22@georgefox.edu.
