Please vacate these lots and be mindful of where you park during Welcome Weekend

Wednesday, August 16th, 2023

Welcome Weekend is almost here! In order for our hundreds of new students to have a seamless move-in experience, we need extra cooperation from the staff, faculty and students already here on Thursday evening, Aug. 24, and Friday, Aug. 25.

Staff and faculty: Please plan to park along the street, in the Bauman or 99W lot on Friday.

Students: If your on-campus residence is Pennington, Edwards, Weesner Village, Hobson, Macy, Sutton, Le Shana, Gulley, Brandt or Newlin halls, we need you to vacate the lots associated with these locations on Thursday morning and stay out of them on Friday.

If you normally park in the Le Shana or Newlin Hall lots, please move your cars as close to Fulton Street as possible so that the areas in front of the buildings remain clear. You can also move your vehicles to the Bauman lot.

Everyone who parks in the Pennington lot, lollipop area, Edwards or Weesner Village needs to move to the 99W lot on Thursday morning. Please keep Sheridan Street clear for easier access for our incoming students!

The lot in between the Roberts Center, Gulley and Brandt halls must be vacated on Thursday evening.

Questions? Please contact Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 and view the parking brochure on the CPS website for lot locations. Thank you in advance for your cooperation to help make move-in day the best day ever for our new students!

Keep these things in mind during heat wave this week

Tuesday, August 15th, 2023

Temperatures are soaring this week. Expect temperatures to range between 90 and 105 degrees. Humidity will also be high, from 45% to 63%. It may feel a lot warmer.

As per our heat protocol, please follow these steps:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water every 20 minutes.
  • Schedule more strenuous work in the cooler parts of the day, such as the morning.
  • Take advantage of cooler buildings such as the Murdock Library, Klages, or Canyon Commons.
  • Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., check on fellow employees every hour to two hours.
  • Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

If you have any questions about best practices during high heat, please contact Kim Knoernschild, our environmental health and safety specialist, at kknoernschild@georgefox.edu.

New class offering for the fall: Oregon Politics, taught by Christine Drazan

Monday, August 14th, 2023

The Department of History of Politics is offering a new class, PSCI 285/485: Oregon Politics, taught by Christine Drazan, minority leader of the Oregon House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021 and the Republican nominee for governor in 2022.

This class will give students a real-world understanding of how campaigns are run, policies are created and advocates are heard. In addition, it will provide students with access to professionals and politicians whose careers have put them “in the room” at critical times in Oregon’s history.

Within an environment of respectful dialogue, the course will bring in guest speakers from across the political spectrum for candid conversations about the role of politics in addressing Oregon’s challenges and opportunities for progress.

Students will use critical thinking and analysis, as well as the application of biblical principles to real-world political scenarios, to establish their own path to lifelong, faithful, wholehearted civic engagement. This class is open to students from any major.

Speak Spanish? Pick up a button to let our guests know

Monday, August 14th, 2023

One of the best things about George Fox is our welcoming spirit. In an effort to extend that gift to our Spanish-speaking community (families, guests and students), we are offering our campus community the opportunity to pick up a button that identifies you as someone who can help in their home language.

If you speak Spanish proficiently and would like to be a resource, we have a button for you! These buttons can/should be worn during large anchor events (Welcome Weekend, Family Weekend, prospective events, etc.) and then displayed on your desk for the rest of the year.

You can pick up these awesome buttons in the Barclay House (SpiL and Parent and Family Programs), beginning Wednesday, Aug. 23, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and after Welcome Weekend in Carlee Anglin’s office in the Meridian Street House.

Feel free to contact Megan Fisher at mfisher@georgefox.edu with any questions.
