Speak Spanish? Wear a button to let our guests know

Monday, August 21st, 2023

One of the best things about George Fox is our welcoming spirit. In an effort to extend that gift to our Spanish-speaking community (families, guests and students), we are offering our campus community the opportunity to pick up a button that identifies you as someone who can help in their home language.

If you speak Spanish proficiently and would like to be a resource, we have a button for you! These buttons can/should be worn during large anchor events (Welcome Weekend, Family Weekend, prospective events, etc.) and then displayed on your desk for the rest of the year.

You can pick up these awesome buttons in the Barclay House (SpiL and Parent and Family Programs), beginning tomorrow (Wednesday), between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and after Welcome Weekend in Carlee Anglin’s office in the Meridian Street House.

Feel free to contact Megan Fisher at mfisher@georgefox.edu with any questions.

Interested in politics? Public policy? Enroll in class taught by Christine Drazan

Sunday, August 20th, 2023

Interested in how politics works at the state level? Curious about public policy and advocacy? Want to meet and hear from state legislators, a campaign manager, a political reporter, a political communications director, a legislative director, a public policy analyst, and more?

If you said yes to any of these questions, then PSCI 285/485: Oregon Politics is the class for you.

Christine Drazan, former minority leader of the Oregon House of Representatives (2019-21) and the Republican candidate for governor (2022), will teach this class aimed at helping students understand and navigate public policy, advocacy, and civic engagement.

This class is offered at both the 200 and 400 levels. Students who take the upper-division version will have more rigorous assignment expectations than those who register for the lower-division option. The class meets on Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and is open to all students, freshmen to seniors.

Be aware of chapel credit info for the fall semester

Sunday, August 20th, 2023

We are so excited for our fall semester chapel calendar! The schedule is up on iAttended, and you can check it out for yourself.

If you are an incoming student, make sure you download the iAttended app before school starts. Remember that every student needs to complete 15 chapel credits by the end of each semester. Ten of those credits need to be in Bauman Auditorium at our Tuesday/Thursday chapels, and the other five can be done in chapel or through elective credits.

Looking forward to seeing you there, and we can’t wait to see what God has in store for us this year!

Be sure shipping address is correct on all your package orders

Sunday, August 20th, 2023

When ordering your packages, please remember to use the correct shipping address: 501 N. Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132. There is an address across the street from the Roberts Center that reads 510 N. Villa Road, and some student packages have been delivered there.

Please note that any misdelivered package(s) to that address will not be brought over to Mail Services, students will not be allowed to pick up packages at that address, and the resident at that address will not be returning any misdelivered packages to the sender.

Please be sure to double-check that your name and correct address is in the shipping information when ordering your packages. If you have any questions, please contact Richard Silver at rsilver@georgefox.edu.

A resource for employees: Students in Distress Folder

Thursday, August 17th, 2023

The Office of Student Life thought it would be helpful to provide information about what we can do at George Fox University when concerns arise about a student’s behavior. While some of the information is more specific to traditional undergraduate students (due to the residential nature of these programs, etc.), some of the information applies to graduate and ADP students and programs as well.

In the past, we have delivered brightly colored folders with information for staff and faculty to use as a resource in situations where a student in crisis needs intervention. There is also information about employee responsibilities regarding FERPA as well as guidance in a campus emergency.

In order to reduce paper, as well as make these materials accessible to you online, we have created a folder in Google Drive. Please bookmark this folder for quick reference.

For more information, please contact Jere Witherspoon at jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2316.

Be aware of change to medical care model in Health and Counseling Center

Wednesday, August 16th, 2023

Beginning this semester, the university is no longer offering its own primary medical care. Rather, we are welcoming a new health care model for students in partnership with Providence Medical Group.

The medical care clinic will continue to be co-located with counseling services, but it will be staffed by providers from Providence Health systems. As such, medical care will be accessed through students’ medical insurance plan similar to when they go to see their own medical care providers at home (with the requisite costs associated with their medical insurance plan such as co-pays and deductibles).

Please note that this change only applies to medical care. Counseling services will continue to be offered to students through George Fox at no additional cost.

We believe students will be well-served by partnering with Providence Medical Group. A couple of anticipated advantages of moving to this model are expanded hours and access to Providence Health system’s expansive network of specialists and medical services.

The new Providence medical services and George Fox counseling services will be housed in the Health and Counseling Center’s current location on campus (Woodward House). We are looking forward to the excellent medical care that Providence will provide and will be communicating details regarding these changes on the Health and Counseling website.
