Following are some refund tips from the Office of Student Accounts.

Tip #1: Have you granted ‘Financial Aid Permission?’

If you have not completed a “Financial Aid T4 Permission Form,” please understand that federal funds cannot pay course fees and fines without your permission. This may result in an unpaid charge and a credit balance at the same time. When that happens, we have to audit the account to be sure the refund is valid. That takes time and slows down refunds significantly. 

To grant “permission,” please sign into My.GeorgeFox.edu and go to your task tile, or follow the steps at this link. The federal rule is that you complete this before your financial aid disburses.

If your loans have already disbursed for the semester, you will need to complete two steps: 1. Complete the form, and 2. Email studentaccountrefunds@georgefox.edu this week to authorize us to pre-date the effective date of your permission form.

Tip #2: Session Start Dates Impact Refund Timing

If your first session this spring begins after Jan 19, your aid disbursement will be delayed until at least 10 days prior to session start, resulting in a refund delay. Please do everything else you can to help us expedite your refunds. (Click link and scroll down to “Refunds”.)

Tip #3: Participation in Student Account Direct Deposit is now Mandatory!

If you have not signed up for Student Account Direct Deposit (DD), you must do so immediately.  (Employment and Student Accounts DD enrollments are two entirely separate processes.)

Please sign into My.GeorgeFox.edu and go to your task tile to complete this requirement. Failure to do so will result in refund delays.

Spring semester 2021 is less than one month away! As you make plans to pay for spring, sometimes your financial aid may not look as you expect.

If your anticipated aid on your MyGeorgeFox Financial Account tile is less than you expected, or some aid isn’t displaying on your Student Accounts invoice under Pending Aid, here are a few common reasons:

• You are not fully enrolled, enrolled full time, or are on the wait list for one or more courses. You must be enrolled full time for institutional aid, and at least half time for federal aid.
• You have some missing documents to complete. Check your MyGeorgeFox to-do list for any outstanding documents.
• If you have a private loan, the funds may have not yet arrived. Once the funds arrive, your pending aid will be updated to reflect this amount.

Learning Support Services is recruiting two or three graduate students to work as academic mentors for high-risk students on the Newberg campus during the spring 2021 semester.

Academic mentors generally work seven to 10 hours per week, and are paid current minimum wage. Students can find more details and application information on the HandShake position posting. The position is open to any George Fox graduate student. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

Past academic mentors have commented on how much they grew through the experience, especially through their one-on-one sessions with high-risk students. The role is not a formal counseling role, but has similarities that can be especially helpful for graduate students who will be entering helping professions.

David Shaw has joined the university as a part-time assistant professor in the master of medical science (physician assistant) program. Since 1978, he has had a private practice in Salem, specializing in general orthopedic surgery and lower-limb reconstruction. He also holds staff privileges at Salem Hospital and Northbank Surgery Center in Salem. Previously, he taught orthopedics part time as an associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University’s Shriners Hospital, and he served as an assistant professor of orthopedics at Christian Medical College in India (1973-75). In all, David has more than 50 years of experience in the profession, beginning his career in 1968 as an orthopedic surgeon in India. He holds a doctorate from Christian Medical College, Punjab University, in Ludhiana, India (1963). He lives in Salem with Rita, his wife of 55 years, and has two daughters, a son and four grandchildren. David attends Salem Alliance and is heavily involved in overseas medical missions, taking orthopedic and rehabilitation teams for the last 21 years to Ecuador and Peru to treat children with bone and joint deformities, abnormalities and diseases.

Abigail Buckles (Honors Program) and Seth Van Der Eems (Art and Design) are no longer with George Fox University.

The Portland Writing Center is seeking a new writing consultant who is enthusiastic about helping fellow graduate and degree-completion students understand the components of effective writing.

Portland Writing Center consultants are current adult degree-completion and graduate students who work four to eight hours per week meeting with students in Zoom or email sessions through the Portland Writing Center.

Writing consultant duties include helping students with the following:

• Thinking through ideas for a writing assignment
• Considering writing choices with regard to audience, focus, purpose, cohesion, and organization
• Developing ideas with specific evidence
• Improving research strategies
• Applying proper documentation and formatting, and
• Understanding basic grammar and mechanics

Sarah Reid has transitioned to the position of director of enrollment special projects and content in the marketing communications office.

Kelly Ward has transitioned to the position of associate director of marketing content in the marketing communications office.

The university’s fall theatre production, Silent Sky, was reviewed by Roman Sanchez, a respondent for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival who serves as a theatre program analyst for the California Arts Council. He has reviewed more than 50 virtual theatre productions, both at the professional and university levels, in the last eight months, and stated George Fox’s production was one of the best he had seen.

His praise is reflected in the following Kennedy Center awards:

In addition, the show is currently being considered for production at the regional festival in February 2021. Only four shows a year make it to the regional festival, which includes the following states: Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, northern and central California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. 

Sunggu Yang (Theology), along with his editorial team, published Vol. 7 No. 2 of the Asian American Theological Forum. In addition, he published an article, “With Jørn Utzon: Approaching and Preaching Architectural Texts,” in Vol. 45 No. 2 of Homiletic: The Journal of the Academy of Homiletics. 

Ron Clark (Seminary) recently conducted online training sessions for the Multnomah County Family Violence Council, addressing working with intimate partner violence in churches, holding offenders accountable, and confronting abusive faith leaders. He also is part of the Healing the Healer documentary series (taped in December 2020) through Odyssey Impact in New York. The series will be used to train clergy, seminary students, and lay leaders, and will be released in 2021.

Interested in helping stop the spread of COVID-19? The university is currently recruiting for a COVID contact tracer and case manager to support efforts to stop the virus’ spread on campus. It is a temporary position that requires about 25 hours per week. 

This individual will be responsible for contacting students diagnosed with COVID-19 and work with them to recall everyone with whom they have had close contact in a certain timeframe, as well as any buildings they were in. This person will also manage inputting information in the case management system, initiate the referral process, and notify all involved.

Some flexibility will be needed, as the schedule may include varying hours, including evening and weekend work.

The Office for Spiritual Life is looking for several Life Group leaders for our seven-week spring Life Groups series (the weeks of Feb. 22 through April 9).

Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship. Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes. This spring, all groups will meet in either a Zoom or hybrid format. (Hybrid groups will meet primarily via Zoom, but may occasionally meet outdoors as the weather, state and university regulations, and participant comfort permit.)

Throughout the pandemic, Life Groups through SpIL will also be SpIL-credit eligible in order to encourage students to engage in high-quality spiritual formation experiences that are participatory and offer ongoing community.

We welcome our employees, alumni, family members of George Fox employees and students, and members of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group. Groups may also be co-led with an upper-classman student if the leader desires.
