Tent City

Tent City 2016

Tent City is one of the most beloved and unique traditions to George Fox! All the students who are planning to participate in Juniors Abroad camp out on the quad the night before enrollment. This tradition began in the early 90s when students began lining up on the quad to be the first ones in line for enrollment, giving themselves the best possibility to enroll for their top trip. This quickly gained popularity and students began pitching tents on the quad and camping out overnight in order to be first in line.

Tent City 2016

Tent City is now organized by ASC and students are assigned campsite numbers based on a random lottery. Based on your campsite number and the popularity of your desired trip, you may not always get your first pick, but you can be waitlisted for a second trip. The enrollments change frequently so even if you didn’t get your top trip and you waitlisted for it, you still have the possibility of securing a place in your top trip!

FUN FACTS ABOUT TENT CITY:

    • Before ASC started organizing Tent City, it was up to the students! Unfortunately, a dispute broke out in which the Newberg Police had to respond. Since that event, ASC has taken over Tent City to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable time for everyone.
    • Every year, ASC leaves the first campsite number open and the last five tent sites compete in various games. Whichever tent wins the majority of the games and scores the most points are then given the first campsite and first choice of enrollment.
    • Unfortunately, weather cannot be controlled. There have been numerous years where tents have flooded overnight.
  • According to ASC rules, at least one person has to stay in the tent at all times from the time it is put up, until the time of enrollment.
