Polar Plunge

Once known as the “Polar Bear Swim” the Polar Plunge is recent tradition in George Fox history. The polar plunge is a shocking yet exhilarating event.  Originating in 1999, students would go to lake Trillium to swim in the freezing waters. After completing the freezing swim, students are gifted a free sweatshirt! In addition to the sweatshirt, s’mores, hot cocoa, and many other snacks are provided next to a large fire.

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE POLAR PLUNGE:

    • Originally taking place in December, the Polar Plunge now typically takes place in late January or early February.
    • Students are required to go underwater in order to officially complete the swim and win the sweatshirt.
    • Depending on the year, this tradition is known as either the Polar Plunge or the Polar Bear Swim.
  • Don’t be afraid! Even if you’re not a great swimmer, the water is only deep enough that most people can touch and walk if needed (although most prefer to swim as fast as possible in order to finish quickly).  Two lifeguards are also on duty at all times!
