The discipline is one of eight majors offered in the school’s College of Business

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Fox University’s new financial planning major has received the approval of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc.

Schools that earn the certification distinguish themselves among their peers by meeting the CFP Board’s education, examination, experience and ethics requirements. Students completing the financial planning program at George Fox will have met the education requirement for CFP certification examination administered by the CFP Board.

“Students who complete our program and attain their CFP certification will be prepared and bring a strong work ethic and integrity to the field of financial planning,” said Jekabs Bikis, dean of the George Fox College of Business. “The CFP credential will set our graduates apart and will open doors for them to quality jobs and meaningful service. Very few Christian universities in the nation offer this major in their business schools; we are happy to bring this opportunity to students in the Northwest.”

George Fox introduced financial planning as a major this fall, adding the discipline to its seven existing undergraduate degrees in business: accounting, business administration, economics, finance, global business, management, and marketing.

“As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that George Fox’s program will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to attain the CFP certification, the standard of excellence for competent and ethical financial planning,” said Richard Salmen, chair of the CFP Board’s Board of Directors.

The CFP Board is a Washington, D.C.-based independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to benefit the public by granting, upholding and promoting the Certified Financial Planner certification. The board oversees more than 300 programs at more than 200 institutions.

George Fox University is ranked by Forbes among the top Christian universities in the country and is a Christian college classified by U.S. News & World Report as a “Best Regional University.” Money magazine ranked it the No. 1 school in Oregon in its 2017-18 “Best Colleges for Your Money” list. More than 4,000 students attend classes on the university’s campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem and Redmond, Ore. George Fox offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, six seminary degrees, and 13 master’s and doctoral degrees.
