NEWBERG, Ore. – Students and staff from George Fox University will join five Portland-area colleges to serve at the eighth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 15.

The event, organized by Oregon Campus Compact, begins and ends with rallies at Warner Pacific College. This year, teams will serve at more than a dozen sites in the Portland metro area, including at a food pantry, George Himes Park, with the Gresham Parks and Recreation Department, at Nadaka Nature Park and at Birch Community Services, which specializes in distributing clothing, household goods and wholesome food deemed surplus by product donors.

Teams will plant trees, assist with gardening projects and the removal of invasive species, pack food and do maintenance work for charitable organizations. The day begins with a morning rally at 9:30 a.m. at Warner Pacific, followed by service time from 10 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m. The event concludes with a final rally at 2:30 p.m. In all, more than 500 volunteers are expected.

The goal of the day is for college campuses to “come together unified in service to others, and taking part in embodying the ‘beloved community’ that Dr. King beckoned so many towards as a result of his Christ-centered vision and faith,” said Rusty St. Cyr, associate university pastor for Christian community development at George Fox.

Joining George Fox at the event is Warner Pacific College, Portland State University, Mt. Hood Community College, Concordia University and Portland Community College.
The Portland event ties into a national day of service. Initiated by Congress in 1994, Martin Luther King Day of Service builds on the civil rights leader’s legacy by transforming the federal holiday honoring him into a national day of community service grounded in his teachings of nonviolence and social justice.

Service is nothing new at George Fox. For 18 years the university has hosted Serve Day, when it closes school for one day in early September to send students and staff members out to surrounding communities to perform various volunteer projects. Last year, more than 2,000 Serve Day volunteers visited more than 100 sites in Portland and surrounding cities, serving in venues that included schools, churches, civic organizations and retirement homes.
