{"id":5054,"date":"2018-08-16T22:11:38","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T05:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/library\/?p=5054"},"modified":"2019-10-10T16:39:12","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T23:39:12","slug":"open-textbook-initiative-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/library\/2018\/08\/16\/open-textbook-initiative-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Textbook Affordability Program Saves Students nearly $800,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the past two years, the university\u2019s library has worked with faculty to save students $797,893<a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#estimate\">*<\/a> in textbook costs. It\u2019s happened in two ways: through the Open Textbook Initiative, which provided incentives for faculty to use a textbook available for free in the Open Textbook Library, and by employing the use of e-books whenever possible.<\/p>\n<p>Several faculty members have replaced expensive publisher textbooks with open textbooks, or even authored their own. <u><a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.georgefox.edu\/pennington_epress\/1\/\">Jennie Harrop&#8217;s writing textbook<\/a><\/u> is now part of the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/open.umn.edu\/opentextbooks\/BookDetail.aspx?bookId=531\">Open Textbook Library<\/a><\/u> (OTL), and an open textbook by the seminary\u2019s Nijay Gupta and some of his graduate students was <u><a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.georgefox.edu\/pennington_epress\/2\/\">also recently published<\/a><\/u> and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/open.umn.edu\/opentextbooks\/BookDetail.aspx?bookId=592\">added to the OTL<\/a><\/u>. A third faculty-authored open textbook is scheduled for release during the 2018-19 academic year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/open-texts-montage-1.png\" rel=\"lightbox[5054]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5060\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/open-texts-montage-1-472x600.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"478\"><\/a>In 2017-18 alone, use of open textbooks at George Fox reduced student costs by $256,231 \u2013 up from $118,855 in the program\u2019s first year.<a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#estimate\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We now have 24 George Fox faculty reviews on the Open Textbook Network Library (links to our faculty reviews are below). Faculty from colleges and universities around the world can browse the library and read reviews by our faculty and others to help with their decision to adopt an open textbook for their class.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, students saved $226,660 by finding their required readings in the library&#8217;s e-book collection, with no limits on use. That improved upon the prior year&#8217;s total of $196,147 in savings.<a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#estimate\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This fall the library <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgefox.edu\/library\/Services\/Faculty\/textbook-affordability.html\">Textbook Affordability Program<\/a><\/u> will surpass $1,000,000 in student savings as the program enters its third year.
