{"id":4945,"date":"2017-04-25T10:46:58","date_gmt":"2017-04-25T17:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/library\/?p=4945"},"modified":"2019-10-10T16:38:20","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T23:38:20","slug":"open-textbook-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/library\/2017\/04\/25\/open-textbook-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"The George Fox University Open Textbook Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the first year since Robin Ashford (E-Learning Librarian) and Gloria Doherty (Hybrid-Learning and Education Technology Director) launched the Open Textbook Initiative at Fox, faculty members saved George Fox students a total of over <span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>$118,000<\/strong><\/span> in the 2016-2017 academic year. <strong>Kudos!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .3em;\">Supported by the university&#8217;s Innovation Fund, the initiative:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>gave faculty an incentive to explore replacing expensive course textbooks with open (free) textbooks<\/li>\n<li>allowed Fox to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.cehd.umn.edu\/otn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Textbook Network<\/a>, which curates a collection of quality, peer-reviewed, open textbooks available to the world through the <a href=\"http:\/\/open.umn.edu\/opentextbooks\/\">Open Textbook Library<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/RobinAshford\/an-open-textbook-initiative\">Visit these slides<\/a>&nbsp;to learn why open textbooks and textbook affordability matters at George Fox, along with detailed results of the&nbsp;initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative will be funded for a second year.
