Searching for People

Krisztian Balog, a PhD student in the research group of Maarten de Rijke, has developed a new and improved method for finding people in organizations.  Search engines do not perform nearly as well at searching for entities as they do when searching for text.  In combining generative language models with learning algorithms Balog’s computer program finds patterns in language use and recognizes people and organizations in texts.  Eventually this same research could be applied to search engines.  More details and examples of how this search technology could be used are available in the Science Daily article, New Computer Program Improves Search for People.
