Most literate cities

Central Connecticut State University does a study and publishes a report called “America’s Most Literate Cities“.  The most recent is for 2007.  The study is done on the largest 69 cities in the U.S. (population of 250,000+).  The study looks at six key indicators: newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment, and Internet resources. 

Top 10 most literate cities:

  1. Minneapolis, MN
  2. Seattle, WA
  3. St. Paul, MN
  4. Denver, CO
  5. Washington, DC
  6. St. Louis, MO
  7. San Francisco, CA
  8. Atlanta, GA
  9. Pittsburgh, PA
  10. Boston, MA

Portland, OR just missed the top ten coming in at #12.
