{"id":62121,"date":"2019-03-18T10:20:55","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T18:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/ennounce\/?p=62121"},"modified":"2019-03-18T15:11:26","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T23:11:26","slug":"about-our-people-237","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/ennounce\/2019\/03\/18\/about-our-people-237\/","title":{"rendered":"About Our People"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Clella Jaffe<\/strong>\n(Communication Arts, Emerita) presented &#8220;Three Sources of Evidence:\nObjectivism, Subjectivism, and Tradition&#8221; in a roundtable discussion group\ntitled &#8220;What Counts as Evidence in Moral Reasoning?&#8221; at a meeting of\nthe Western States Communication Association in Seattle on Feb. 23.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kelly Chang<\/strong> and <strong>Sue O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Donnell<\/strong> (Psychology) collaborated\nwith seven psychology majors to present four posters at the national convention\nof the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in Portland in\nFebruary.&nbsp;Chang presented \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Different forms of happiness and resilience for\nhigh school and university students in Nicaragua\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with students Ryan Johnson,\nCameron Stumpf and Madison Hancock; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Character strengths, well-being, and\nschool engagement among youth in the Peruvian Amazon\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with Richter scholars\nNika Griffith and Abigail Bullock; and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Psychological influences of acting\ntechniques in undergraduate theatre students\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with Richter scholar Hannah\nStrawn.&nbsp;O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Donnell presented \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Personality as an identity domain: The\nidentity centrality of narrow and Big Five traits\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with Richter scholar Ashton\nHoffman.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wendy Flint<\/strong> (IDEA\nCenter) presented \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Strategies for Managing an Integrated Academic and Career\nAdvising Center\u00e2\u20ac\u009d at the 2019 Region 8 NACADA Conference in Calgary, Canada, on\nMarch 9. NACADA is a global academic advising association. She received a\nscholarship to attend the conference, which drew 400 attendees from the\nNorthwest and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Corban Harwood<\/strong>\n(Mathematics) recently published an article, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Lost at Sea: Introduction to\nNumerical Methods through Navigation,&#8221; in SIMIODE, a mathematics resource\ndedicated to teaching differential equations using modeling and technology\nupfront and throughout the learning process. His piece analyzed differential equations\nas they apply to navigation in today&#8217;s sea, air and spacecraft. Along with <strong>Brian Snider<\/strong> (Computer Science), <strong>Walker Orr<\/strong> (Computer Science) and Peter\nOtto (Willamette University), Corban presented \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Philosophical Challenges and\nOpportunities for the Mathematical Sciences,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a panel discussion on Big Data\nalgorithms and academic preparation, at the Oregon Academy of Sciences in\nFebruary. In January, Corban presented \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Flipping Differential Equations\u00e2\u20ac\u009d at the\n2019 Joint Mathematics Meeting to encourage active, inquiry-based pedagogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Young-IL Kim<\/strong>\n(Sociology) published an article in the most recent issue of <em>Sociological Quarterly<\/em>, titled \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Explaining\nGender Differences in Changes in Volunteering after Divorce.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guadalupe Garcia McCall\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/strong>\n(English) book, <em>All the Stars Denied<\/em>,\nhas been named a finalist for the Texas Institute of Letters\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Best Young Adult\nBook\u00e2\u20ac\u009d award. The TIL is a nonprofit honor society founded in 1936 to celebrate\nTexas literature and recognize distinctive literary achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Danielle N. Pappas<\/strong> (Counseling)\npresented a lecture at the annual conference for the National Association of\nSchool Psychologists in Atlanta on the topic of culturally and linguistically\ndiverse students and autism spectrum disorders. The presentation was designed\nto develop skills in identifying autism spectrum characteristics in culturally\nlinguistically diverse (CLD) students. CLD students can display developmentally\nand culturally appropriate behaviors that mimic or coincide with a variety of\nASD characteristics or manifestations. By taking into consideration the\ninfluence of cultural and linguistic diversity on behavior, this workshop\nhelped develop culturally competent skills in evaluating CLD students for\nautism spectrum disorders. The session also discussed the cultural sensitivity\nof common evaluation tools and how to navigate the evaluation process with\nthese tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nicole M. Enzinger<\/strong>\n(Education) published a chapter, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Integers as Directed Quantities,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in a\nSpringer book called&nbsp;<em>Constructing Number,<\/em>&nbsp;edited by Anderson\nNorton (Virgina Tech) and Martha Alibali (University of Wisconsin). Nicole\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\nchapter on children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s thinking about integers is part of a book that synergies\nresearch across two disciplines, mathematics education and psychology, and\naddresses how children construct number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sierra Neiman Westbrook<\/strong> (College of Christian Studies) published an article, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Choose Your Own Adventure: A Very Egalitarian Proposal,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in the Spring 2019 issue of <em>Mutuality<\/em> magazine, published by Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ed Higgins<\/strong> (English Emeritus) published his poem \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We two\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in the Winter 2019 (Issue 11) of\u00c2\u00a0<em>Blue Heron Review.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>In addition, Ed&#8217;s poem \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Reversal\u00e2\u20ac\u009d was reprinted on the Christian Feminism Today website on March 11.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clella Jaffe (Communication Arts, Emerita) presented &#8220;Three Sources of Evidence: Objectivism, Subjectivism, and Tradition&#8221;
