{"id":47751,"date":"2017-09-24T16:49:37","date_gmt":"2017-09-25T00:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/ennounce\/?p=47751"},"modified":"2017-09-22T07:56:03","modified_gmt":"2017-09-22T15:56:03","slug":"letter-regarding-service-animals-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/ennounce\/2017\/09\/24\/letter-regarding-service-animals-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"A letter regarding service animals on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear colleagues,<\/p>\n<p>As\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0and emotional support animals become more common in public venues, a few guidelines will be helpful to promote positive experiences for students, faculty and staff within the George Fox \u00c2\u00a0community. These guidelines are intended to protect the rights and safety of all community members.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Service\u00c2\u00a0Animals<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0animal as a dog that is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153individually trained\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 The tasks a dog has been trained to provide must relate directly to the person\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s disability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emotional Support Animals<\/strong><br \/>\nFederal laws recognize emotional support animals as reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities for purposes of housing and travel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Service\u00c2\u00a0Animals on Campus<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0animal,\u00c2\u00a0employees may ask two specific questions: (1) Is the dog a service\u00c2\u00a0animal required because of a disability? and (2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?\u00c2\u00a0Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person&#8217;s disability (see\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/service_animals_2010.htm\">ADA guidelines<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>If a dog is not trained to perform work or a task, an employee may ask the handler not to bring the animal into the room or building. Emotional support animals that provide comfort but do not perform a task are not\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0animals.<\/li>\n<li>All\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0animals are required to be well behaved, controlled by the handler, on a leash or under voice control at all times, and housebroken, in accordance with\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/service_animals_2010.htm\">ADA guidelines<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If a\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0animal is being disruptive, the handler is required to remove the\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0animal from the room or building until the animal is ready to return. If an employee believes a\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0animal is being disruptive, he or she may ask the handler to leave the area or the building until the animal is ready to return.<\/li>\n<li>Any necessary cleanup is the handler\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s responsibility.<\/li>\n<li>If any member of the George Fox community indicates he or she has an allergy or phobia to dogs and is affected by the presence of dogs on campus, please notify the Disability\u00c2\u00a0Services\u00c2\u00a0Office as soon as possible. We will work toward a solution that meets the needs of all involved.<\/li>\n<li>Students must have approval from the housing office and the Disability\u00c2\u00a0Services\u00c2\u00a0Office in order to house a\u00c2\u00a0service\u00c2\u00a0animal in campus housing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Emotional Support Animals on Campus<br \/>\n<\/strong>The university allows emotional support animals in campus housing under certain conditions.
