{"id":44374,"date":"2017-03-06T14:35:18","date_gmt":"2017-03-06T22:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/ennounce\/?p=44374"},"modified":"2017-03-06T14:37:52","modified_gmt":"2017-03-06T22:37:52","slug":"about-our-people-197","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/ennounce\/2017\/03\/06\/about-our-people-197\/","title":{"rendered":"About Our People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Patrick Allen<\/strong> and <strong>Kenneth Badley<\/strong> (Education) released their book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Echoes-Insight-Perspectives-Christian-Education\/dp\/0891123326\"><em>Echoes of Insight: Past Perspectives and the Future of Christian Higher Education<\/em><\/a>, in February. <em>Echoes of Insight<\/em> offers brief summaries of 11 thought-provoking writers from the last century and encourages a new, vigorous conversation about Christian higher education.<\/p>\n<p>Five of <strong>Ed Higgins\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/strong> (English) haibun were published in the annual \u00e2\u20ac\u0153best of\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0<em>Journeys 2017: An Anthology of International Haibun<\/em>. The<em> Journeys<\/em> series is an invitation-only inclusion, with editors recommending haibun published in their various journals during the previous year (eight of Ed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s were submitted by editors from several journals). In addition, Ed was appointed\u00c2\u00a0copy editor for the\u00c2\u00a0biannual\u00c2\u00a0poetry journal <em>These Fragile Lilacs<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Writers with ties to George Fox\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s English department are featured in the Spring 2017 issue of <em>The Windhover<\/em>, a Xian literary journal. The issue includes <strong>Ed Higgins\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/strong> poem \u00e2\u20ac\u0153When the wind\/sky really is God,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <strong>Gary Tandy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/strong> creative nonfiction piece \u00e2\u20ac\u0153What Love Looks Like, As I Recall,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and <strong>Joshua Hren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/strong> short fiction story \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Man Watching.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Also included is a poem, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Nunc Dimittis,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by English alumnus <strong>Jeffrey Bilbro<\/strong>, now an assistant professor of English at Spring Arbor University, and a poem, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Life that is Ours,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by 2016 almunus <strong>Daniel Roberson<\/strong>. <em>The Windhover<\/em> is one of the nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s premier Xian literary journals, published by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Press. <strong>Bill Jolliff<\/strong> is a contributing editor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jennie Harrop<\/strong>, <strong>Carol Hutchinson<\/strong> and <strong>Michelle Shelton<\/strong> (Department of Professional Studies) delivered a talk, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153From Ad Hoc to Intentional: One Department&#8217;s Online Journey,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d at the Oregon Technology in Education Network\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s annual conference at Pacific University on Feb. 11. When George Fox\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Department of Professional Studies offered four online courses in the summer of 2010, the faculty did not know what would come of the experiment. Six years later, the department now offers more than 25 online classes per semester, including one online major, and the program is growing. The majority of DPS students juggle families and full-time work in addition to school, and increasingly students are seeking the convenience of online offerings for both required major and general education courses. With eight regular faculty members, more than 40 adjunct faculty members, and roughly 300 adult degree-completion students, DPS faculty are working to anticipate\u00c2\u00a0market demands and articulate an online structure that will endure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don Powers<\/strong> (Biology) joined with colleagues to publish two research articles in the <em>Journal of Experimental Biology<\/em> (2016), 219: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Flight mechanics and control of escape manoeuvres in hummingbirds. Flight kinematics.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paul Anderson<\/strong> (Christian Studies) published an article, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/the-trial-of-pilate-a-touchstone-to-the-death-of_us_58bd3719e4b02eac8876d0c7\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Trial of Pilate \u00e2\u20ac\u201c A Touchstone to the Death of Jesus,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/a> in the March 6 issue of The Huffington Post.
