Sherman St.<\/strong>, in Newberg. All are welcome to attend! If interested, <strong>you must RSVP<\/strong> at <a href=\"mailto:bbrown10@georgefox.edu\">bbrown10@georgefox.edu<\/a>. The day includes lunch and class materials for free.<\/p>\n<p>The event is designed to equip those who feel called to help those in poverty above and beyond the act of entering into friendship with them. Friendship is step No. 1, but progress toward a healthy life requires more than just that.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the main goals of the class:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know the history and structural causes of poverty to ensure that you are operating from facts, not stereotypes<\/li>\n<li>Understand the complexities of poverty and how many different life experiences define poverty<\/li>\n<li>Operate with the assumption that people in poverty are making the best decision they can with the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153shoes\u00e2\u20ac\u009d they are wearing<\/li>\n<li>Create relationships based on identification, not the transaction of resources<\/li>\n<li>Foster an environment where everyone belongs, has value and an opportunity to shine<\/li>\n<li>Understand how to implement changes in communication, teaching and learning styles to enhance connections and success<\/li>\n<li>Honor oral culture, relational styles of communicating and learning<\/li>\n<li>Educate people living in poverty about the middle class, print culture, and norms needed to be successful in the education and work world<\/li>\n<li>Understand mentoring as a belief in someone\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s strengths, uncovering motivation and unlocking potential<\/li>\n<li>Assist people living in poverty through networks of support and advocating for resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contact Beau at the above e-mail address if you have questions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student Beau Brown is hosting a poverty awareness and advocacy training class this Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 610 E.
