Re-Evaluating the Claim for Phoenician Aniconism.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The $2,500 prize, sponsored by the Dorot Foundation and administered by the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), goes to that paper judged to most advance the scholarship of its given field. The essay is an archaeological and iconographic study of whether or not the Iron Age Phoenicians tried to represent deities by \u00e2\u20ac\u0153empty spaces,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or aniconically (as opposed to iconically, i.e., through anthropomorphic divine statues, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Brian will present the paper at the ASOR research meeting in mid-November in Chicago. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll also present a piece from what he plans to become his next book project at the Society of Biblical Literature Meeting in Chicago at that same time, called: <em>Natural Theologies: The Transformation of Israelite Anthropology in the Book of Job<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Brian\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Last-Rephaim-Conquest-Cataclysm\/dp\/0674066731\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1342816516&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=last+of+the+rephaim\"><em>The Last of the Rephaim: Conquest and Cataclysm in the Heroic Ages of Ancient Israel<\/em><\/a>, is currently in the printing and distribution process and will be for sale through Amazon. He also has three articles in the <em>Dictionary of the Bible and Western Culture: A Handbook for Students<\/em> (Sheffield Phoenix Press), forthcoming in early November, as well as two peer-reviewed articles appearing in 2013 (in <em>Harvard Theological Review<\/em>, in the March issue, and the <em>Journal of Biblical Literature<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keith Dempsey<\/strong> (Counseling) is one of 10 individuals being honored at the 25th annual Emerald Awards Dinner at Oregon Health and Science University\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Center for Health and Healing on Nov. 10. The award, given out by the PINK Ivy Foundation and the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, is given in honor of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153African-American men who have shown a commitment to serving their community\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153obtained significant achievements,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d according to event organizers. Keith is being honored for his work in education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rick Muthiah<\/strong> coauthored \u00e2\u20ac\u0153An Exploration of the Spiritual Roots of the Midcareer Faculty Experience\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with Virginia Lee and Dorothe Bach. The chapter was published in the Professional and Organizational Development in Higher Education (POD Network) annual book series, <em>To Improve the Academy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Douglas Campbell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/strong> (Visiual Arts) mixed media artwork \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Word Was\u00e2\u20ac\u009d was juried into the &#8220;Christianity and Popular Culture&#8221; exhibit at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, for October and November. In addition, three of his acrylic paintings \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Mt. Hood Summit,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Widowmakers\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Two Ancients\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c were juried into the &#8220;Art in the City&#8221; exhibit in the Civic Center in Independence, Ore., for October-December. Finally, in October he presented \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Aesthetic of Violence in Visual Art and Poetry\u00e2\u20ac\u009d at the Verge Conference 2012: Art and Ethics (Trinity Western University in British Columbia), and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Art and Belief,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d at &#8220;The Art of Faith: Theology, Imagination &amp; the Arts in Conversation&#8221; (St. Paul\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Episcopal Church in Oregon City).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kenn Willson<\/strong> (Performing Arts) recently premiered a new \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Encounters with &#8230;\u00e2\u20ac\u009d series. The Tualatin Valley Oregon Music Teachers Association invited Kenn to return this fall and present his \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Encounters with Bach\u00e2\u20ac\u009d multi-media piano recital. Kenn performed on Oct. 12 at the Tigard Christian Church and presented a concert of Bach\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dance movements, complete with videos of the dances and audience participation. Nearly 400 were in attendance, more than double the attendance of last year, according to sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00e2\u20ac\u0153God\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Politics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d blog by Sojourners published a piece that Roger Nam (Seminary) wrote concerning the recent George Fox Evangelical Seminary DMin advance in Korea: <a href=\"http:\/\/sojo.net\/blogs\/2012\/10\/12\/pacifism-scariest-place-earth\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Pacifism in the Scariest Place on Earth.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Head<\/strong> (Economics) and <strong>Nate Peach<\/strong> (Economics) participated in the Hillsdale College Free Market Forum on \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Markets, Government, and the Common Good\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in Houston, Texas, Oct. 4-6.
