Look for yellow-lidded bins when recycling

Tuesday, December 10th, 2019

In order to eliminate confusion, Waste Management is changing the lids of recycling bins to a bright yellow to further distinguish recycling bins from trash bins. Please take your comingled recycling to a bin with a yellow lid and avoid dumping trash in the yellow-lidded bins.

In addition, if you have not already received an indoor recycling bin, our team is distributing the indoor blue recycling containers for office and dorm room use. Please use those bins for your comingled recycling and not for trash. It is very important to keep garbage out of the recycling bins.

For more recycling information, visit this webpage. Thank you for helping to conserve resources!

Airport shuttles available

Monday, December 9th, 2019

George Fox is once again partnering with Hillsboro Airporter to provide a shuttle service to Portland International Airport for the semester break.

Students will be expected to work directly with Hillsboro Airporter to reserve their spot. See the details below:

  • The cost for one passenger is $65 plus a tip. Each additional passenger is $3.
  • Each shuttle can fit five to six passengers. The cost per student is based on the total number of passengers during the scheduled times, so if you can fill one shuttle with six passengers, the cost per student could be as low as $15.
  • If you make your reservations more than 24 hours in advance, Hillsboro Airporter can group you together. To reserve your spot, click here.
  • Hillsboro Airporter accepts cash or credit card for payment. Parents can call Hillsboro Airporter with a credit card to pay for their student’s fare.
  • Hillsboro Airporter has 24/7 service. It will work with students and their families to put students together to lower the cost of the fare.

Faculty: Please let your students know about this service.

End-of-term FoxTALE reminders for faculty

Monday, December 9th, 2019

As the semester closes, Library Digital Learning has a few reminders for faculty:

  • You will want to keep an archive of the gradebooks for all of the courses you have taught for the past five years. If you used the FoxTALE gradebook in your 2019 Fall course sites, you can export each gradebook into a spreadsheet that can be saved outside of FoxTALE. The guide, Downloading the Gradebook, includes a video demonstration on the process.
  • You will want to use your new 2020 spring course sites to teach your spring semester courses, since students are automatically enrolling in these sites. If you would like to import content from another course site, the guide, Importing Course Content, includes a video demonstration and step-by-step instructions.
  • 2020 spring sites are currently hidden from students. When you are ready, you can give students access to your courses. The guide, Making the Course Visible, demonstrates how to make a course available.
  • You may need to adjust the course start and end dates in each of your course sites. This will assure that your courses are listed correctly in the Dashboard (e.g., courses move from “Future” tab to “In Progress” tab on Jan. 13). The guide, Adjusting Course Start and End Dates, demonstrates how to make this adjustment. Note: Adjusting the Course Start Date does not make the course accessible to students. Only the setting, Course Visibility, enables students to enter the course.

As we move into the season of inclement weather, you are invited to join us in a web conference to share ideas on conducting class sessions using  Zoom web conferencing. Check Digital Learning Upcoming Events for dates and how to join sessions.

You will find additional guides at Digital Learning. You can contact digitallearning@georgefox.edu for support.

Return or sell your books to the Bruin Store

Monday, December 9th, 2019

Don’t forget that the Bruin Store buys back books year-round! Bring your student ID and the textbooks you no longer need, and if we can buy them, you will leave with cash in hand.

If you rented books for fall semester through the Bruin Store, the last day to check those books back in is Friday, Dec. 13. Please bring them to the Bruin Store (along with your student ID) during business hours to avoid any late, processing, or non-return fees.

Did you find the book you need but Amazon sells it for less? No worries! Just show us that the same book is being sold and shipped from Amazon, and we will be happy to match the price.

About Our People

Monday, December 9th, 2019

Sarita Edwards (Christian Studies) coauthored a book, Breaking through the Boundaries: God’s Mission from the Outside In, published this fall through Orbis Books. In it, four experienced missiologists draw upon biblical narratives to highlight key roles played by those outside established Jewish/Christian religious tradition in the service of God’s mission. The authors apply the missiological insights gleaned from the biblical accounts to contemporary issues such as global migration crises and interreligious strife. Coauthoring the book were Azusa Pacific University’s Paul Hertig and Young Lee Hertig, and Robert L. Gallagher from the Wheaton College Graduate School.

Paige Parry (Biology) and two George Fox biology alumni, Elizah Stephens and Chris Murar, collaborated with Daniel Tinker from the University of Wyoming to publish a paper, “Environmental determinants of recruitment success of subalpine fir (Abies lasiocapra) in a mixed-conifer forest,” in Western North American Naturalist, a peer-reviewed scientific journal focusing on biodiversity and conservation in western North America.

Ed Higgins (Writer in Residence and English Professor Emeritus) published a haibun, “Syntax Connections,” in the most recent issue of the online journal Failed haiku (a Journal of English Senryu).

Don Powers (Biology) coauthored an article, “The allometry of daily energy expenditure in hummingbirds: an energy budget approach,” accepted for publication in the Journal of Animal Ecology. In it, the authors suggest that the unusually high energy cost of flight (including hovering) explains why daily energy expenditure increases with body size faster in hummingbirds than it does in any other warm-blooded animal.

Jennifer Lehman (Business) presented “Faith, Stewardship and Legacy Planning (and tax benefits for you)” at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberg on Nov. 24.

Kent Yinger’s (Seminary) book, God and Human Wholeness: Perfection in Biblical and Theological Tradition (Cascade, 2019), was released in October. In it, Kent argues that God intends flourishing and wholeness for his human creation rather than “perfection.”
