Consider contributing to university’s Textbook Assistance Fund

Wednesday, December 12th, 2018

George Fox is a private college, so if students can pay to enroll, they can certainly pay for their books, right? Not necessarily. Click this link to see stories of undergraduate students who would have benefited from help buying course materials.

For some students, purchasing textbooks can make the difference between a college education and dropping out of college. The Textbook Assistance Fund  has been created to provide assistance to undergraduate students who cannot purchase required textbooks or course materials due to financial hardship.

We invite you to donate to the Textbook Assistance Fund.  One faculty member contributed a portion of royalties, turning income from book sales into funds that enable students to acquire textbooks. See the invitation to contribute if you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation to the fund.

Contact Cheri Hampton (champton@georgefox.edu) if you have questions about the Textbook Assistance Fund.

Write a ‘thank you’ note to someone who’s made a difference

Tuesday, December 11th, 2018

Is there someone at George Fox University who has made a difference in your college experience? Someone who ignited a spark that made you want to learn more than you thought you could, someone who walked alongside you during a difficult season, or a person who has been a mentor?

Take a moment to write an email, e-card, or traditional “thank you” card to that professor, RA, tutor, supervisor, or another influential person. Try to be specific as you describe how this person has contributed to your life.

Students in Newberg can stop by the ARC or Bruin Den to pick up a blank card while supplies last!

Need a ride? Shuttle transportation service available during break

Tuesday, December 11th, 2018

George Fox is partnering with Hillsboro Airporter to provide shuttle service to Portland International Airport. Students will be expected to work directly with Hillsboro Airporter to reserve their spot.

Here are the details:

Each shuttle can fit five to six passengers. The cost per student is based on the total number of passengers during the scheduled times, so if you can fill one shuttle the cost per student could be as low as $15 (if you have a total of six passengers). Cost for one student is $65.

If you make your reservations more than 24 hours in advance, Hillsboro Airporter can group you together. To reserve your spot, go online to Hillsboro Airporter & Car Service LLC.

Hillsboro Airporter accepts cash or credit card for payment. Parents can call Hillsboro Airporter with a credit card to pay for their student’s fare. Hillsboro Airporter has 24/7 service. It will work with students and their families, putting students together to lower the cost of the fare.

Other options for transportation can be found on the above website. Questions? Contact the Office of Student Life (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2316).

Be aware of phishing attempt emails

Monday, December 10th, 2018

There have been a few phishing attempts that have been circulating through George Fox emails. These attempts can come in various forms, and they are sent to try to gain access to either your email account or to confidential information. So that you don’t fall victim to these attempts, please review the guidelines below.

If you feel you’ve received a suspicious email, check the following:

  • The sender’s address. If it is unrecognizable or something similar to, but not exactly, the sender’s normal email address, it could be an attempt. Please note that a similar email address does not mean the original email address has been compromised; this is called a spoofing account.

Examples of email addresses used in recent phishing attempts: rbaker@my.com and mshelton.georgefox.edu@gmail.com.

  • Any link or odd instructions. If the email directs you to click on a link (even something familiar such as iTunes, etc.) or input sensitive information, it could be an attempt to get your password or other important information. Verify with the sender personally if you are suspicious.

If you feel that you have received some sort of phishing attempt:

  1. Email the Service Desk at servicedesk@georgefox.edu.
  2. Mark the email as “spam” in your Gmail inbox, which will then make Google aware of the issue.
  3. Request that anyone who has been emailed via the attempt also mark it as “spam” in their inbox.
  4. If you did not click on any links or reply, you do not need to do anything further.
  5. If you did click on a link or send a reply with sensitive information, you’ll want to change your password as soon as you can in MyGFU (this will automatically update your email password). Then go through the Settings in your Gmail account to look for anything amiss, such as an unfamiliar forwarding address or vacation-responder that you never created.

Feel free to call the Service Desk at 503-545-2569 and press “2” if you would like help walking through these steps.
