Spring Serve trips in need of employee, alumni advisors

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

We are in the process of planning and pulling together the teams for our annual Spring Serve trips (March 23-30). We have several organizations with whom we have annually partnered in service and are looking for current employee or alumni “advisors” to participate with our Serve Trip student-leaders. These individuals serve as university representatives, support the student leaders on their respective trips, and help keep these experiential ministry opportunities purposeful, successful, educational, and helpful to our hosts.

Our goal is for each trip to have two student leaders who are responsible for all trip coordination and team meetings. The job of the trip advisor would be to come alongside them and to offer support, wisdom, advice (especially in terms of risk-management), and general life-experience and spiritual guidance as the students lead the team.

If you are interested or have more questions, please contact Rusty St. Cyr at rstcyr@georgefox.edu or call ext. 2319. If you know of any alumni who are beyond two years of graduation who would be interested, please feel free to pass on this information to them. We hope to have the advisor roles filled by March 1.

Spring Serve trip descriptions can be found at this link.

Modern conservation efforts discussed in Monday’s LACI lecture

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

Join us for the fifth installment of the spring Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series this Monday, Feb. 25, in Hoover 105. The theme of this spring’s lecture series is “State of the Union.”

Monday’s session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Dr. Fred Van Dyke, executive director of the Au Sable Institute for Environmental Studies. He will present a lecture titled “Hope and Hopelessness: Overcoming the State of Despair in Modern Conservation,” in which he will argue that, concerning conservation efforts, hope is “not a product of emotional exhortation but a reasoned and confident expectation of an altered future condition relative to present circumstances.”

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Questions? Contact Paul Otto at ext. 2676 or potto@georgefox.edu.

Housing Deposit & Selection Reminder

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

To be eligible to participate in Housing Selection for the 2013-14 academic year, each student needs to have paid his or her $150 housing deposit to Student Financial Services by March 15. Before you pay, please be aware of the following:

  • Your student account must be paid in full. If on a payment plan, your February payment (or March payment if after March 1) must be received and any amount not covered by your payment plan must be paid.
  • Regardless of who pays the deposit, each student must stop by SFS. If the deposit is accepted you will receive a Housing Deposit Confirmation slip. This slip is needed as a record of payment.
  • A payment received in any other way won’t be processed as a deposit, but instead will overpay the account or be applied toward the next monthly payment. SFS routinely refunds over-payments, so if you get a refund check you are not expecting please stop by to confirm the status of your deposit.

Need to Request a Housing Accommodation?

If you need to request a housing accommodation for medical or disability reasons, please complete a Housing Accommodation Request. These forms are available in the Student Life Office or on the George Fox website. Requests should be submitted to student life by March 1 in order to be evaluated prior to housing selection.

Questions? Please contact housing@georgefox.edu or refer to the Housing and Residence Life website for additional information.
