The Bruin Grounds Coffee Shop is now open in the Student Union Building from 4 to 11 p.m. every day! As you get off of work or need a place to meet, enjoy 25 percent off any food or drink item courtesy of ASC.

Swaziland summer team hosts service fundraiser

The Swaziland summer serve team is setting aside Saturday, Feb. 23, to serve the employees of George Fox in whatever way they may need: yard work, around-the-house projects, cleaning, childcare, etc.

We are doing this as a donation-based fundraiser to help raise support to send our team to Swaziland. If you are interested, please contact Kimmee Hoecker at hoeckerk10@georgefox.edu.

Ushers needed for theatre’s production of ‘Mrs. Packard’

Would you like an opportunity to see the theatre department’s production of Mrs. Packard for free? If you volunteer to usher for one of the shows, you will get to see it free of charge. Below are the dates and times that ushers are needed.

Bruin Madness III

Only a few days left until Bruin Madness III!

You don’t want to miss the Indoor Tailgate Party (use your card to get in if you are on the meal plan, $8 for adults, $5 for kids 12 & under). Come in your BlueZone shirt, get your face/hair painted, and make a poster to cheer on the teams. Take a photo with the new Bruin Mascot at the photobooth in the KidZone at the gym or compete against a friend in Bungee Basketball.

Honor our senior basketball players and then cheer them on as they play the Linfield Wildcats.

After the games head over to EHS for the PostGame Blow Out. Don’t forget to check out Bruin Grounds between 4-11 p.m. for their Bruin Madness specials. You don’t want to miss the third annual Bruin Madness!

Test-taking seminar scheduled for Friday

Tests are one of the most common stressors for students. Rick Muthiah (Dean of Learning Support Services) will share tips for mastering course content, preparing for tests, and developing tools for taking tests at a session, “Effective Test-Taking and Other Secrets to Success,” this Friday, Feb. 1.

Chinese language class meets tonight in International House

The first Chinese class in this semester is set for tonight (Tuesday) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the International House. Usually we spend the first half hour reviewing what we learned in the last session, and the following hour learning new things. So don’t worry if you cannot come until 7 p.m.

In the first class, you will have the first half hour to tell me what you want to learn and how you would like me to teach, and I will try to make this Chinese-learning experience as fun as possible. Free snacks will also be provided.

Swaziland summer serve team hosts baking fundraiser

Do you enjoy baking and want to help support the Swaziland summer serve team? We are looking for anybody who is willing to make and donate any sort of yummy treats for a fundraiser we are doing.

We willing be selling the treats in the Bruin Grounds Friday, Feb. 1, and Friday, Feb. 8. Any donated treats can be brought to the Spiritual Life House by 5 p.m. on either Friday. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!

Fourth ‘Coffee and Conversation’ discusses work of adjuncts Feb. 4

The fourth faculty “Coffee & Conversation” of the year, titled “Collaboration: Partnering with Adjunct Faculty,” is set from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, in Hoover 104.

In this session, Melanie Springer Mock and Gary Tandy will share their experience working with and supporting Writing 110 adjunct faculty, and Mark Ocker will discuss how adjuncts teaching in the Adult Degree Program are supported.

Housing Selection Information

Housing selection for fall 2013 will occur March 18-22. Please refer to the following links for additional information as you prepare for this:

Please note that in order to participate in housing selection each student must have a $150 housing deposit paid to Student Financial Services. After housing assignments are made, this deposit will be held and applied toward future housing charges.

Theatre department’s ‘Mrs. Packard’ opens next week

Come support the theatre department by attending our winter production, Mrs. Packard. The show runs Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 7-10, and Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 14-16, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the Sunday, Feb. 10, show, scheduled as a 2 p.m. matinee.

Tickets can be purchased online at theatre.georgefox.edu or by calling 503-554-3844.

All George Fox students may receive a complimentary ticket for Thursday evening performances. All faculty and staff are entitled to one complimentary ticket for any show of the run. Tickets are available for pick-up in the Box Office located in the Pennington House. Box Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Online tickets can be purchased at any time.

Play Description: Illinois, 1861. Elizabeth Packard fights for her life and her dignity when her husband, Reverend Theopholis Packard, commits her to Jacksonville Insane Asylum without proof of insanity for challenging his religious fundamentalism. Based on historical events, Mrs. Packard is a penetrating story about one woman’s struggle to follow her convictions despite the enormous costs to her family, her friends and her personal dignity.

LACI lecture series opens tonight with discussion on education

All are invited to the first installment of the spring Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series tonight (Monday) in Hoover 105. The theme of this spring’s lecture series is “State of the Union.”

The session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Rob Saxton, deputy superintendent of public instruction for the state of Oregon. Saxton will present “Education: The Future of Oregon Today,” in which he will share about the plan underway to reform education in the state and lead Oregon toward its most successful future.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.
