IJM chapter meets Tuesday night in International House

Kathy Harris has moved from a temporary position as an administrative assistant in the English/communication arts department to a full-time role. She was an on-call registrar for Providence Newberg Medical Center from 2009 until the spring of this year and has been a clerical substitute for the Newberg School District for the past 17 years. Kathy lives in Newberg with her son Dylan, who transferred to George Fox this year from Western Oregon University. She also has a daughter, Halsey, and a granddaughter, Paisley. She attends 2nd Street Community Church in Newberg.


The seminary’s hybrid program has hired Mindy Holland as an administrative assistant III. Since 2007, she has served as the coordinator of candidacy and office manager of the Oregon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). Mindy holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Willamette University (1993), a Master of Arts in Ministerial Studies from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pa., (2001), and a certificate in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship from George Fox Evangelical Seminary (2010). A consecrated diaconal minister with the ELCA, she lives in Aloha and attends Light of Life Lutheran Church, where her husband Stuart is pastor. Mindy loves reading, writing, travel, prayer, deep conversations with friends, and ballroom dancing.


The university has hired Marcey Keefer Hutchison as an assistant professor in the physical therapy program. A physical therapist and certified athletic trainer, she has worked the past 14 years as the clinical director of Therapeutic Associates, Valley Physical Therapy in Keizer, and was also a shareholder in the company. Marcey directed the athletic training program for the Salem-Keizer school district for six years. She also has work experience in a hospital setting, serving as a director in the sports medicine department of the Salem Hospital Regional Rehabilitation Center in the mid-1990s. In the early 1990s, she was a staff physical therapist specializing in sports medicine at a private practice with two clinic locations in Portland. Marcey holds a master’s degree in physical therapy from Pacific University (1991) and a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Willamette University (1988). She lives in Salem with her husband Don, cat and horse, and attends Morning Star Community Church.


Steve Peters joined the university as director of admissions operations this month. He has spent the past three years at Linfield College, where he was an admission technical specialist in the school’s admissions department. The six and a half years prior to that, he worked as the support desk and lab manager for Linfield’s Integrated Technology Services. He also worked as an admissions counselor for Linfield (2000-01). Steve earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Linfield in 1994. He lives in Sherwood with wife Kristen, son Daniel and daughter Analee, and attends River West Church in Lake Oswego.

Rodney Birch (Library) was elected to the board of directors of the Foundation for the Advancement of Christian Librarians at the organization’s annual conference this month. Rodney was elected vice president for a two-year term (2011-13). ACL is an organization of evangelical Christian academic librarians that seeks to empower Christian librarians through professional development, scholarship and spiritual encouragement for service in higher education.

A solo exhibit of Douglas Campbell’s (Visual Arts) paintings, titled “Light and Dark,” are on display in the Fireplace Gallery at Mt. Hood Community College through Oct. 27. Another exhibit, “Whole Fragments,” will be up at Chapters in Newberg from Oct. 7 through Nov. 3.

Joel Perez (Dean of Transitions and Inclusion) and his wife, Jennifer, welcomed a daughter, Elizabeth Emelia, on Sept. 9. She was born at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center and weighed 5 pounds, 6 ounces while measuring 19 ¾ inches long. She joins three older brothers: Samuel, Noah and Seth.

Chapel Credit System Down

The mygfu chapel credit system is currently down and showing that most students have a 0 requirement of needed chapel credits. The issue is being worked out should be solved by the end of this week . If you have questions regarding your requirement, please recheck your account the end of this week before contacting Spiritual Life.

Remember only students who are 22 years of age or have 93 accumulative credits at the beginning of the fall semester are automatically exempt.

ASC Supreme Court Positions

The following positions on the ASC Supreme Court are available:

As a member of the ASC Supreme Court, you would take part in ensuring the central committee is acting within the bounds of the constitution and with the overall best interest of the student body.

You would also take part in managing the community life fund, which exists to promote community on campus.

The positions are paid and are a great way to get involved on campus.

Applications are due Friday, September 23 at 5 p.m. in the ASC offices.

Candidates forum scheduled Sept. 27 at Villa Academic Complex

On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest’s monthly meeting in Newberg will feature a special candidates forum from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Villa Academic Complex.

Ballots will be mailed to voters next month for a special First Congressional District primary election to fill the vacancy created by the recent resignation of longtime U.S. Rep. David Wu. Six of the filed candidates have accepted the Christian Chamber’s invitation to take part in the forum: Republicans Jim Greenfield of Tigard, Pavel Goberman of Beaverton and Lisa Michaels of Beaverton, and Democrats Saba Ahmed of Portland, Robert Lettin of Sherwood and Dan Strite of Warrenton.

The Christian Chamber group in Newberg last year sponsored a well-attended forum involving state Senate and House candidates. Based on the success of that event, the group has scheduled this forum regarding the special congressional election.

Coffee, tea and pastries will be available at the meeting, which is free for Chamber members who R.S.V.P. at cccnw.net. A $5 donation is suggested from non-members and guests who R.S.V.P.

Alumna returns to speak about her work with orphans in Uganda

The Center for Peace and Justice invites the community to hear from alumna Davy Desmond from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the religious studies lounge. Davy, a double major at George Fox in economics and international studies, has focused her energies on serving the poor, working the past few years with Orphan Relief and Rescue. Currently, she is working to establish a thriving ministry in Uganda.

After speaking at GFU she will leave for Uganda on Oct. 1, where she will partner with Show Mercy International. For 70 days she will work in “Hope Children’s Home,” home to more than 100 children, and will also help build the “Field of Dreams,” a 25-acre plot of land designated for ministry (a school, a clinic and a church).

Lead male actor needed for student film

Our movie, Worth It!, is in need of a lead male actor. There are only two words in the whole movie, so don’t worry too much about dialogue. It’s an unpaid gig with minimal shooting, but you will be fed.

The shoot will be done the weekend of Oct 15. Audtions for the movie will be held this Thursday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. in the Media Center on campus. Resumes are not required, just headshots. If you have acting experience, make sure to include it in the e-mail.

The film is Charlie Chaplin-esque. Actor should be very animated and look between 20 and 35. If interested or if you have questions, e-mail Mac Oxford at moxford09@georgefox.edu.

Gowan speaks on maternal mortality in the Majority World

On Monday, Sept. 19, Marcella Gowan (Nursing) will speak on the issue of maternal mortality in the Majority World. Marcella served as a missionary nurse-midwife for 20 years and has teaching experience in many countries.

Marcella’s presentation is part of the Liberal Arts & Critical Issues series “Majority World and the West.” She will speak from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105.
