Several art alumni will be celebrated at the closing reception for the “Voices†art exhibition in the Lindgren Gallery next Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. All are former George Fox art students who continue to be significantly involved in making art.
Honored will be Elizabeth Kuzmovich, Chelsea Carbonell, Jessica Brittell, Megan Clark, Olga Ceballos and Kathleen Jones.
This Monday, Oct. 19, Elizabeth Grossman will discuss the connection between western habits and majority-world health at a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues event from 4:40 to 5:35 p.m. and from 7 to 7:55 p.m. in Hoover 105.
Elizabeth has contributed articles to The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and numerous other publications. Her two newest books, High Tech Trash: Digital Devices, Hidden Toxics, and Human Health and Chasing Molecules: Poisonous Products, Human Health and the Promise of Green Technology, have been widely praised. Tuesday, Oct. 20, is the date for this year’s conference for our valued support staff. This is an all-day event that will keep these folks off campus, away from all of their regular duties. We know we will miss their contributions that day, but this once-a-year event is endorsed by the President’s Executive Leadership Team with the expectation that all support staff will attend, so we appreciate your full support as well. Some services may be reduced or not provided on that day, but things should be back to normal on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

For the first time, the students’ annual “Survivor” event will be posted live via the web. Just go to the Bruin Heritage’s Facebook page and click on the link, or type in rtsp://stream.georgefox.edu/live/survivor.sdp to view live footage of “Survivor” contestants trapped inside a van for up to 24 hours on Thursday, Oct. 15. Look for it also being played throughout campus, or just come and watch it in person outside of the Bruin Den.

Just a reminder that at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 15, a “Movie & Munchies” event in EHS 102 will feature As We Forgive, a documentary about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. As announced in June, PeopleSoft works on a calendar year to track support staff and administrators’ vacation carryover balances. If a balance of more than one year of vacation accrual remains after December time sheets and time-off reports are processed (in January), the employee will lose the portion that exceeds one year’s accrual.

The university community is welcome to join Lisa McMinn’s social change class for “A Week Of Living Light” Oct. 19-24. In conjunction with 350.org, help us get the attention of political leaders by joining us throughout the week for our different environment-friendly events. The week will culminate with a celebration on the quad on the international day of climate change, Saturday, Oct. 24. At 3:30 p.m. that day, we will gather to take a picture of a human “350” and march down Highway 99W to city hall.

Could you forgive a person who murdered your family? This is the question faced by the subjects of As We Forgive, a documentary about Rosaria and Chantal, two Rwandan women coming face-to-face with the men who slaughtered their families during the 1994 genocide.
Multicultural Services will host a free showing of the movie at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in EHS 102. The subjects of As We Forgive speak for a nation still wracked by the grief of a genocide that killed one in eight Rwandans in 1994. Overwhelmed by an enormous backlog of court cases, the government has returned more than 50,000 genocide perpetrators back to the very communities they helped to destroy. Without the hope of full justice, Rwanda has turned to a new solution: reconciliation.
But can it be done? Can survivors truly forgive the killers who destroyed their families? Can the government expect this from its people? And can the church, which failed at moral leadership during the genocide, fit into the process of reconciliation today?
