Campus bookstore has a new name: Bruin Bookstore

Starting immediately, the Newberg campus bookstore has officially changed its name from George Fox University Store to Bruin Bookstore. The new name allows the bookstore to represent the university with a more collegiate feel and gives us the opportunity to highlight our great mascot. Same great merchandise, same great service, great new name! Come check us out.

Third Annual Burn on the Quad Sep. 16

The Third Annual Burn on the Quad will take place Wednesday, September 16 at 11:40 a.m.  After chapel, walk through the Quad and see the Newberg Fire Department discuss fire safety with a demonstration of a fast burning residence hall room.

Quaker approaches to higher ed discussed at Tuesday ‘Feast’

This is a reminder of the Tuesday, Sept. 15, Intellectual Feast, which will discuss the topic “Quaker Approaches to Higher Education” from 4 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 250.

Outlining their essays in the most recent issue of Quaker Religious Thought, Jamie Johnson will present on “From Cutting Edge to Chopping Block: Reclaiming a Quaker Approach to Christian Higher Education,” and Paul Anderson will present on “The Mission of the Christ-Centered Quaker College.”

Free copies of the QRT issue will be available for the first 20 attenders. Refreshments provided!

Music chapter hosts orientation meeting Sept. 20

Attention all music majors, minors and people who just love music: The George Fox Chapter of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference is hosting its first meeting at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 20, in the Choir Room. Come to meet the chapter’s executive officers and learn more about the music programs at George Fox.

Movie ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ shown Sept. 17 in EHS 102

Multicultural Services invites you to come watch and discuss the movie The Motorcycle Diaries with your fellow George Fox neighbors at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, in EHS 102. Popcorn and other goodies will be provided, and you can bring your own as well.

Based on a true-life story, The Motorcycle Diaries is an inspiring and thrilling adventure that traces the youthful origins of a revolutionary spirit. The film follows two daring friends who hop on the back of a beat-up motorcycle for a breathtaking and exciting road trip across Latin America. Spanish professor Uriel Plasencia will moderate.

Room still available for biblical entrepreneurship course

There are still openings available for the three-day intensive course on how to apply foundational biblical principles to basic business concepts. The course, Biblical Entrepreneurship 1 (BE 1), will be hosted at the Portland Center Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 17-19. Sessions will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The course is being offered at a discounted rate of $250 for George Fox employees, students and alumni.

Also, you are invited to hear about biblical entrepreneurship directly from course founder Patrice Tsague on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when he speaks at the monthly Northwest Christian Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Hayden’s Lakefront Grill, 8187 S.W. Tualatin-Sherwood Road, in Tualatin.

Religious Studies is hosting an Intellectual Feast, discussing the topic “Quaker Approaches to Higher Education” from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Hoover 250.

First concert of season plays Sept. 12 in Bauman Auditorium

The Department of Performing Arts will kick off the concert season with the first performance of the year this weekend. The Symphonic Band and Concert Choir will host a concert to end their retreat Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

Bruin Bookstore announces new hours

The Bruin Bookstore’s hours are now 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Starting Sept. 19, the bookstore will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., except during George Fox holiday weekends, the Christmas break and the summer season.

Creation Care Committee taking inventory on who teaches environmental science

Do you teach anything about environmental science, ecology, creation care, sustainability in any of your courses? Or perhaps you teach an entire course dedicated to one of these topics?

The Creation Care Committee wants to know about it. Please let us know even if you just teach on such a topic one day out of the entire course. We are trying to get an inventory of where creation care and the environment are being taught in our curriculum. Haven of Hope Ranch – Opportunities for GFU Students

Do you love horses, love children, and are interested in volunteering in your community?

Haven of Hope is a non-profit, volunteer run organization that offers horse therapy to disabled and under privileged children of all ages. The ranch is in need of volunteers who can commit a few hours a week towards the program. If you would like to learn more about how you can help encourage children through interaction with horses, or even are interested in mucking out stables, grooming, or feeding the horses, please get involved.

Haven of Hope is located only about 15 minutes up the road from George Fox University. Saturday the 12th at 8:30am, there will be a “horse 101” training “class” at the stables for those interested in volunteering.

Sophomores win Bruin Brawl

From the helicopter flash to the hour and half of brawling, there was plenty of excitement for the Bruin Brawl on Serve Day, Sept. 9. Bruin Junior, newly made, was torn to shreds, and in the excitement, the university sign in front of Wood-Mar was delettered. The sophomores successfully took the head of Bruin Junior off campus, winning the brawl. Here are the points rewarded for this brawl:

Freshmen: 20 points – Class Pride
Sophomores: 50 points – Winning the brawl
Juniors: 0 points
Seniors: 0 points
