Meal plan FAQs answered

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Now that everyone has been enjoying their meals in our newly remodeled cafe, we wanted to share a few thoughts over the next several days that will answer a few questions we’ve been asked recently:

How do I get a meal if I’m not feeling well?

No problem.  If you’re not feeling well and you don’t feel up to coming over for a meal, please give us a call at ext. 2500 and let us know.  Then give your ID card to either your RA or your roommate and have them come over and let our card swiper person know who they are getting a meal for.  Our cashier will swipe the ID card and then will give that person a pre-assembled box breakfast, lunch, or dinner filled with lots of easy comfort type foods to bring back to you.

I have a scheduling conflict on Tuesdays and don’t have time to come over for lunch before the Bon closes.  How can I get lunch?

Great question.  If you have a class conflict or have a job and can’t make it over for a meal, plan ahead and you can order a great sack lunch or dinner.  We’ll have it ready for you when you need it.  Please note:  24 hours notice is required.

Visit the Bon Appetit Offices between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday-Friday and ask for Adelita or Mary.  They will give you a form to fill out, letting us know which days you need the sack lunch or dinner.  You’ll also get to choose from our listing of menu items so that you can customize it just the way you want it.

Please note: This program is available only if you have a conflict and can’t make it over on some kind of re-occuring basis.  This program is not available if you just don’t feel like coming over for a meal or if you want to take off early some afternoon and head to the coast.

Things to remember about meal plans:

1.  The meal plan runs from Monday breakfast through Sunday night dinner.
2.  Once you’ve swiped your ID card equaling the number of meals you’ve paid for (i.e., 14 meal plan = 14 meals per week) you’re on your own until the following Monday.  Be sure to budget your meals wisely so that you don’t run out of meals too soon.
3.  All the meal plans are “All You Care To Eat” while in Klages.  We do not allow any “take-out” food other than a piece of fruit, bagel, ice cream cone, or something else that you’re eating as you exit.
4.  Meals are not transferable to someone else. A friend may not borrow your ID card to have a meal for any reason.  If the picture on the card doesn’t match the peson trying to use it, you’ll both get a chance to visit the Dean of Students.
5.  If you have a visiting friend or family member, we cannot swipe your card a couple extra times to pay for their meals.  We do accept cash and we welcome all visitors to join us for meals while visiting the university.

I forgot my ID card in my room.  Can I still come in to eat?

It’s your choice…either head back to your room and find that pesky card or come up with the cash to pay.  All students are required to have their ID card with them so that we can swipe it and deduct a meal.  It’s no different than needing your card to get into your dorm, swiping for chapel, or checking out books from the library.

If you lose your ID card or leave it home while on break, please come to our offices right away and let us know.  We’ll change the status of your card on our system and issue you a temporary card to prevent someone from using yours if they find it.  Replacement cards can be purchased from the IT Department.  When you find your card or if you have to purchase a new one, you’ll need to bring it to the Bon Appetit Offices in order to activate it to our meal plan system.

Want to know how to save some money?

Last year it cost over $4,000 to replace all the cups, bowls, plates and silverware that students removed from the dining room.  Ultimately those costs are passed on to students as they pay for their meal plans.

Please remember that all dishware needs to stay here so that you have something to eat and drink from tomorrow!

– Bon Appetit
