Student Print credits

 In the past, students have received a $15 print credit for their use at the beginning of each semester. Unfortunately, this credit will no longer be available for students. Printing is now pay-as-you-go. You may load print money buy purchasing print cards at the Portland Center Library desk and loading them onto your “Paper Cut” account.

If you need help with this process, please contact Bruce Arnold, IT Specialist in his office located in the Information Commons or call the IT Service desk at 503.554.256.

Sign-ups now open for faculty courier service

The faculty courier will be running again this year between the hours of 9 and 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. If you are interested in signing up for this service, please e-mail the following information: your name, location of pick-up/delivery, and a list of persons that may sign for deliveries to rbraden@georgefox.edu.

Mail courier will leave Newberg after all-employee meeting

A message from Mail Services: The courier will leave the Newberg campus after Friday’s all-employee meeting, arriving later than usual at the Portland Center.

Deadline to submit requests for library course reserves is Aug. 26

Be sure to turn in your requests for library course reserves no later than Wednesday, Aug. 26, if you wish to have them processed before school starts. The form can be found online.

Requests are processed in the order that they are received and can take up to five days to complete. The beginning of the semester gets a little backed up, and we would appreciate your help by getting your requests submitted as soon as possible. If you have any questions, feel free to call the library circulation desk at ext. 2410 or e-mail mlrcreserves@gmail.com.

Portland Center closure

The GFU Portland Center will be closed on Friday, August 21 from 8 a.m. to noon while the employees attend an all employee meeting in Newberg. The front office will be open from noon to 4:30 p.m. The bookstore will be closed.

Serve Day committee seeks volunteers for evening carnival

The Serve Day committee needs your help for the evening carnival on Wednesday, Sept. 9. If you would be willing to help run a game booth for one hour, please contact Michelle Conrad or Danya Ochsner. The shifts available are 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. or 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Biblical entrepreneurship course offered at Portland Center

The university community is invited to learn how to apply foundational biblical principles to basic business concepts at a three-day intensive course.

What: Biblical Entrepreneurship 1 (BE 1)
When: Sept. 17-18, 6:30-9:30 p.m.; Sept.19, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Where: George Fox University Portland Center

Online registration is available, and more information is posted on the course flier and website. Those who register by Sept. 4 receive a $25 discount.

The Portland Center also will host a one-hour session on biblical entrepreneurship from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4. It will include a 30-minute presentation by Wende Jones, a BE-certified teacher, a panel discussion, and an audience Q&A with the panel.

Also, you are invited to hear about biblical entrepreneurship directly from course founder Patrice Tsague on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when he speaks at the monthly Northwest Christian Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Hayden’s Lakefront Grill, 8187 S.W. Tualatin-Sherwood Road, in Tualatin.

Textbook annex is now open

Beat the rush! Don’t wait in line: The textbook annex is open and books are available for fall. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Aug. 21; starting Aug. 24, hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also order your books online at store.georgefox.edu.

Fall all-community meeting scheduled Friday, Aug. 21

All university employees are requested to attend an all-community meeting scheduled from 8 to 11 a.m. this Friday, Aug. 21.

Activities will begin at 8 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the campus quad to commemorate the recent Klages Dining Hall remodeling project. A breakfast buffet in the dining room will follow. At 9 a.m., the all-community meeting will begin with worship in Bauman Auditorium.

For those at the university’s regional sites, the meeting will be available for viewing at stream.georgefox.edu/live/commmtg.sdp. For best results, use Mozilla Firefox for your web browser, and your computer must have QuickTime Player installed. Simply copy the link into the address bar of your browser. If you have any problems, contact the Service Desk at ext. 2569.

Library closed on August 19

The university’s library will be migrating its catalog and related software to a new server on Thursday, Aug. 13. Foxtrax and library databases will be unavailable from 8 a.m. until Thursday evening.

Access to Mail Services will be limited through Aug. 13

Access to Mail Services will be limited because of street maintenance scheduled through Thursday, Aug. 13.

Here are the details:

  • Access is limited to walking only through Tuesday, Aug. 11.
  • On Wednesday, Aug. 12, Mail Services will be closed all day.
  • Thursday is limited to walking access only.

Please reference the e-announcement from Plant Services regarding the street and parking lot closures. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to be fully accessible next Friday, Aug. 14.

Community invited to PeopleSoft ‘Catch the Wave’ closing event Aug. 12

You are invited to attend the closing event for the PeopleSoft “Catch the Wave” project. We have completed the initial phase of the project as an institution and want to take time together to pause and celebrate our success. There are still more PeopleSoft tasks ahead, but we want to recognize everyone’s effort and hard work. Members of Oracle PeopleSoft and MIS consulting will be joining us.

Please join us from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, in Hoover 105.

Ice cream and snacks will be provided. Also, Aug. 12 is approved as Hawaiian shirt day. Wear your Hawaiian shirts!

A Message from GFU University Mail Services

New Undergraduate Students:

All new students, residents and commuters, have been issued a mailbox assignment.

We will start putting mail into your mailbox on Thursday, August 13.

You will pick up your mailbox key during the Orientation on Thursday, August 27.

If you have received an email notification regarding an incoming package, you may pick up the package at University Mail Services, located in the North Street Annex at the corner of the track and tennis courts, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  We will hold all packages here until you arrive on campus.

Returning Undergraduate Students:

Since most of you kept your mailbox key over the summer, you will be all set when school starts.

If you returned your mailbox key, please stop by University Mail Services and ask for the key.

If you have lost your mail box key, you will need to stop by University Mail Services when you arrive on campus and pay for a new mail box key.

We will stop forwarding US mail on Thursday, August 13.  Your mail from that date on  will be in your mail box when you come back to campus.

Packages will be held at Mail Services beginning on Monday, August 10.

Newberg campus wireless access points will change names as part of upgrade

IT has begun a multiphase wireless upgrade over the next few years. On Tuesday, Aug. 11, the Newberg campus wireless access points will change names. The reconfiguration of the wireless devices will take several hours and will begin at 7 a.m. The current wireless access points names GFU-NEWBERG will be replaced with FOXWIFI. You will no longer need a WEP key to connect; rather, you can sign in using your university login. Specific instructions will be sent to your mailbox early next week.

This will not impact the other campuses at this time.

Comings and Goings

bradengina.jpgGina Braden was hired as a library assistant III for the Newberg library in July. She’s spent the past five years as a counseling secretary and registrar at Yamhill-Carlton High School, where she has coached softball (seven years) and volleyball (11 years) as well. During the 1990s, Regina held various positions at Nike, including business systems support analyst, senior administrative assistant for apparel samples, and operation specialist for international apparel. She studied computer applications, management and accounting at Trend College of Business in Salem, graduating in 1987. Regina lives in Yamhill with her husband Mike and two children, Ashley (18) and Ryan (14). The family attends Newberg Foursquare Church.


parisijenna.jpgThe registrar’s office hired Jenna Parisi as an enrollment specialist II in July. She has served in the position on a temporary basis since February after graduating from George Fox in December with a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication. Jenna also worked in the university’s admissions office as a work-study student from 2004 to 2009. Also, last fall, she was an administrative intern for Medical Teams International in Tigard. Jenna lives in Newberg.


jobsonsarah.jpgSarah Jobson began as an area coordinator in July. For the past six years, she was a resident director at Malone University in Canton, Ohio. She also spent three summers during that time serving as a summer resident director at Malone. In the early 2000s, she was a senior high youth director for Calvary Community Church in Rohnert Park, Calif. Sarah earned a master’s degree in practical theology from Ashland Theological Seminary in 2009 and a master’s degree in Christian ministries from Malone University in 2007. She and her husband Brian have a son, Cale, and live in Newberg.


macyerin.jpgErin Macy returned to the university in July to serve as assistant director of international recruitment. Erin and her husband John have returned to Newberg after enjoying a year of traveling the world. She will assist Thomas Peng in recruiting international students and partnering with universities worldwide. She worked previously at George Fox as an assistant director of undergraduate admissions from 2005 to 2008. Before that, she was a health professions admissions specialist at Portland Community College for two years. Erin earned a master’s degree in exercise and sport science from Ithaca College in New York in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from George Fox in 2000. She and John attend Newberg Friends Church.


predoehl-dan.jpgThe School of Professional Studies welcomes Dan Predoehl as an enrollment counselor at the Portland Center this month. For the last two years, he has worked as a resident director at Western State College of Colorado in Gunnison, Colo. The year before that, he was a student life coordinator and fraternity/sorority life advisor at Occidental College in Los Angeles. This marks a return to George Fox for Daniel, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and international studies from the university in 2005. He also earned a master’s of education degree in college student affairs from Azusa Pacific University in 2007. Daniel lives in Beaverton with his wife Jennifer and attends Solid Rock Church.


Jack Harris (Plant Services) is retiring from the university after 20 years. His initial plans are to take a vacation to Israel with his wife. He also plans to volunteer his time at a homeless mission in McMinnville and at various youth camps in the region.

Sandie Tuck (Registrar’s Office) will not be returning to George Fox, as she has decided to stay home to be with her infant child Christopher.

Brielle Deppe (Tilikum) left the university July 21 to work as an office manager for a radiology department in McMinnville. She also plans to devote more time to her business of making travel silverware sets.

Jan Lefebvre (Advancement) and her husband, Gerry, celebrated the marriage of their daughter, Ali, to Travis Toedtemeier on July 11. The wedding took place at Jan and Gerry’s home in Newberg. Both Ali and Travis are George Fox students.

Select parking lots, Carlton Way will be closed next week

Next week the following parking lots and Carlton Way will be closed for seal coating and re-striping:

  • The Pennington Hall parking lot, the “Lollypop” parking lot (the lot south of the Commons) and the east half of the Bauman parking lot will be closed Monday, Aug. 10, and Tuesday, Aug. 11, for seal coating and re-striping.
  • All of Carlton Way from the Pennington Hall parking lot to Center Street (Lemmons Center), and west half of Bauman will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 12, and Thursday, Aug. 13. Carlton Way will be open on Thursday for through traffic only – no parking.

All or parts may of these areas may be closed for cleaning this week.

Pedestrians, please beware of wet tar. If you walk through it, please do not track it into a building.
