Airport driver needed August 25

Reminder: Laser printer cleaning scheduled Aug. 27-28

This is a final reminder that the University Store is conducting its annual laser printer cleaning event on Aug. 27-28. If you want your office laser printer cleaned, please e-mail Andy Dunn (University Store) the following information:

  • Printer make and model (example: HP 4200TN)
  • Location of printer
  • Contact name and extension number
  • Cost center to be charged

Andy must receive your request no later than Aug. 25.

Call for name tag orders

Marketing Communications is currently collecting orders for name tags. Please submit your requests online. Provide the name of the person for whom the name tag is needed; title or department; and the budget to be charged. Examples of titles/departments include: Dean of Students/Office of Student Life, Admissions Counselor/Undergraduate Admissions. Supervisors should determine a standard for his or her area and attempt to remain consistent.

The next order will be placed Friday, Sept. 12. Communications will verify your request and the information provided and place your order with all others.

Comings and Goings

armstrong-ken.jpgThe School of Management welcomes Ken Armstrong as dean. He is the former dean of the College of Professional Studies at Anderson University in Anderson, Ind. (1995-2003). The College of Professional Studies included the School of Business, School of Nursing, School of Education and Department of Computer Science. He also served as dean of the Falls School of Business from 1991 to 2003 and was instrumental in developing Anderson’s MBA and doctor of business programs. He most recently served as the Austin/Cooper Endowed Professor of Global Business Studies at Anderson. Prior to his appointment at Anderson, Ken worked for 18 years at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., as a professor and department and division chair. He began his teaching career in 1972 as an assistant professor of business at Olivet. Ken earned a PhD from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., specializing in strategic planning, in 1985. He also holds an MBA from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Olivet Nazarene University. He and wife Audrey live in Tigard and have two grown daughters, Shelly and Rhonda.


dee-amy.jpgEducation has hired Amy Dee as an assistant professor in the MAT program. She arrived from Linfield College, where she taught in that school’s Department of Education since 2004. She most recently taught courses on teaching techniques and methods, content area literacy for middle and high schools, and an introduction to middle level and high school teaching. Amy is enrolled in George Fox’s Educational Foundations and Leadership program and has a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of San Francisco. She earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from San Jose State University. Amy lives in Beaverton with husband Andy and children Shaun and Taryn. They attend Valley Community Presbyterian.


floyd-denise.jpgDenise Floyd was hired as the campus nurse this month. A nurse with 25 years of experience in the profession, she has worked the past four years as a staff RN in obstetrics at Providence Newberg Medical Center. She worked previously at hospitals and clinics throughout the Portland area, including Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland (2002-04), The Children’s Clinic in Tualatin (2001-02), Legacy Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin (1998 to 2002), and Willamette Falls Hospital in Oregon City (1993-98). Denise earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Washington State Intercollegiate College of Nursing in 2007 and an associate science degree in nursing from College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif., in 1985. She lives in Sherwood with husband Bill and children Lauren, Lindsey, and Emmett. She attends Countryside Community Church.


glenn_daymond.jpgDaymond Glenn joins the School of Education as an assistant professor in the 
MAT program. He worked previously at Lewis & Clark College since 2004, where he was an adjunct instructor who taught courses on social justice, diversity, and cultural 
issues, a course on community development and social change, and lectured in a number of courses. He also has served as a doctoral resident and coordinator of multicultural education at Reed College in Portland since 2006. Daymond is currently earning a doctor of education degree from Lewis & Clark College. He earned a master’s degree in education from Lewis & Clark in 2003 and a bachelor’s degree in social science from Portland State University in 2002. He lives in Portland with wife Jody and two sons, ages 9 and eight months. He attends Walker Temple Church.


jones-kevin.jpgKevin T. Jones has been hired as an associate professor of organizational communication and director of forensics. He comes from Chapman University in Orange, Calif., where he was an assistant professor since 2001. He also taught at Asuza Pacific University from 1996 to 2001, serving as an associate professor and director of that school’s forensics program. He taught previously at Asbury College (1994-96), Bradley University (1993-94), and Otterbein College (1986-89). Kevin earned a doctorate in communication studies/rhetoric and public address from Louisiana State University in 1995. He holds a master’s degree in speech communication from California State University and a bachelor’s degree in communication from Biola University. He lives in Independence and attends the First Baptist Church of Independence.


amy-lutz.jpgEducation hired Amy Lutz as an assistant professor in the MAT program. Adjunct faculty since 2001, Amy spent the past year as cohort leader for the MAT at Night format. From 1999 to 2007, she was a teacher at Ninety-One School in the Canby School District, where she also coordinated a graphic design seminar for colleagues in the Canby School District since 2001. Previously, Amy worked as a design services manager for Portland-based Woloshin Communications Inc. from 1996 to 1998. She earned a master of arts in teaching degree from George Fox in 1999 and a bachelor’s degree in advertising/public relations from Grand Valley State University in Michigan in 1991. Amy lives in Newberg with her husband, Brendon Connelly, and sons Truman and Asher. The family attends North Valley Friends Church.


macnab-jennifer.jpgJennifer Macnab began work at the Portland Center as an enrollment counselor this month. For the past three years, she has been the Washington County branch manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters, a community- and school-based mentoring program. She also worked for the organization as a bilingual enrollment specialist (2004-05) and before that was a home school consultant for Oregon’s Migrant Education Program. Jennifer earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Western Oregon University in 2000 and a master’s degree in public administration from Portland State University in 2004. She lives in Portland with husband Drew and attends Holy Trinity Church in Beaverton.


meade-chris.jpgThe School of Management welcomes Christopher Meade as an assistant professor of management in Boise. He’s worked since 1993 as the lead pastor and organizational architect of GraceChapel.com, a progressive multi-cultural church in Boise. He also has taught as an adjunct professor at George Fox’s Boise Center for the past three years, instructing in both grad and undergraduate courses. Christopher earned a PhD in education with an emphasis in adult education and organizational learning from the University of Idaho in 2006. He also holds master’s degrees in organizational leadership (George Fox) and Christian ministry (Northwest Nazarene University). He lives in Boise with his wife of 24 years, Mary, and they have three children – Luke, Megan, and Allison. He attends GraceChapel.com.


melendy-robert.jpgRobert F. Melendy joins the schools of education and of arts and sciences as an assistant professor of mathematics. Robert has taught collegiate-level mathematics and physics for nearly 11 years, most recently for the University of Phoenix on a part-time basis the past three years. Robert also has taught as an adjunct professor at George Fox since 2006. Previously, he taught for Heald College (1998 to 2006) and at Linn-Benton Community College in the late 1990s. Robert earned a doctorate in mathematics education from Oregon State University in 2008. He also holds master’s degrees from Oregon State in both electrical and computer engineering and in mechanical engineering. He lives in West Salem with wife Debbie and sister Adrienne, who is disabled. They attend West Salem Christian Church.


meyer-david.jpgDavid Meyer joins the political science department this fall as an associate professor. He comes from Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, where he was an assistant professor of political science and international studies since 2002. Before that, he taught in the Russian language for a year at Saratov State University in Russia, and for a semester at an Orthodox Jewish yeshiva, Touro College. He served for three years as an expert witness and researcher in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut in immigration asylum cases concerning the persecution of Jews, Baptists and Russian Orthodox in the nations of the former Soviet Union. Previously, he was an assistant registrar at the New York School of the Bible in New York City for two years. David earned a doctorate in political science from Columbia University in New York in 2007. He lives in Newberg.


mize-darcy.jpgThe nursing department hired Darcy Mize as an assistant professor. She has taught nursing at Pioneer Pacific College in Wilsonville, Ore., since 2006 and before that was a respite care program volunteer and substitute coordinator for the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center. Previously, she was a care manager and health coordinator for a center for older adults in Winter Park, Fla., for three years and an instructor in nursing and health education for nurses at Florida Southern College in Orlando, Fla., in the mid-1990s. Deborah earned a master of science in nursing degree from the University of Illinois in 1978 and a bachelor of science in nursing degree from Michigan State University in 1973. She lives in Lake Oswego with her husband of 36 years, Gary. They have two adult married children, one college-age daughter, and three grandchildren. She attends Lake Grove Presbyterian Church.


nam-roger.jpgThe seminary has hired Roger Nam as an assistant professor. He taught previously at Fuller Theological Seminary since 2006. He also taught an undergraduate course on Jerusalem at UCLA in 2007 and has directed the UCLA Ugarit Visualization Project, a virtual reality 3D model of an ancient Bronze Age city. Roger worked previously as a pastor in Seoul, South Korea, from 1994-96 and as a financial analyst for Maxim Integrated Products from 1997 to 2000. He earned a doctorate in Near Eastern languages and cultures from UCLA in 2008. He also holds a master of divinity degree from the General Assembly Presbyterian Seminary in Seoul, and a master of theology degree in Old Testament and ancient Near Eastern studies from Fuller Theological Seminary. Roger lives in Lake Oswego with his wife, Samantha, and two boys, Jared and Asher.


nelson-jerrie.jpgJerrie Nelson has joined the nursing department as an assistant professor. She most recently worked as nursing program manager for Providence ElderPlace and as adjunct faculty at Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing. She has worked extensively in community and home health care settings, in direct patient care nursing, and in management, staff development, and quality improvement roles. She also has academic teaching experience as an adjunct faculty member at Clackamas Community College. Jerrie earned an associate degree in nursing from Lane Community College in 1975, a BS in nursing from OHSU in 1980, and an MS in community health nursing and leadership from the University of Portland in 2002. She lives in Portland and is the mother of two recent college graduates, Melissa and Jake. She attends EastHill Church in Gresham and hosts a biweekly care group in her home.


wirtz-ellen.jpgEllen Wirtz joins the nursing department this fall as an associate professor. She taught in Concordia University’s nursing program last year and before that was a lead faculty member of Chemeketa Community College’s nursing department for a year. She has also gained teaching experience at Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash., and at the University of Montana-Helena College of Technology. Ellen earned an EdD degree in higher education curriculum/instruction from Montana State University in 2007 and a master of nursing degree from the Montana State University College of Nursing in 1996. She lives in Tualatin with husband Charles. They have three sons: Joseph, Peter, and John. She attends St. Francis Church in Sherwood.

July time sheets, time-off reports due in HR office

If you have not already done so, please submit your July time sheet (support staff) or time-off report (administrators) right away. Please be sure it is complete, accurate and signed by both you and your supervisor before sending it to HR at Box 6108. The link on the HR website for these documents is: georgefox.edu/offices/hr/forms.html.

If your supervisor is not available to sign it, please send a copy to HR and keep the original until it has been signed. And one last reminder for completing time sheets: Do not write any hours on the date marked holiday (July 4) unless you worked the holiday.

The Office of Human Resources will be closed Aug. 18-22 for PeopleSoft implementation work. We will check e-mail and voice mail as much as we can between sessions, but there likely will be delays in responding to our customers. We regret the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we attend to this necessary training and testing to ensure a successful conversion to PeopleSoft.

The office will reopen on Monday, Aug. 25.

IT announces service hours

The IT Service Desk will have a student employee in the Murdock Learning Resource Center each weekday, Monday through Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and during library hours on Saturday and Sunday. The IT Service Desk in the Stevens Center will be closing at 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The policy for requesting equipment or technical help has not changed. With CAI lab’s closure, MLRC offers ‘info commons’

The room formerly known as the CAI lab (Stevens Center) will now be a classroom. The Murdock Learning Resource Center (Newberg library) will have an “info commons” outfitted with new furniture and six iMac computers that will be an alternate place students can use for online research and printing. Other computer lab areas are the same as in past years.

Wireless password has changed

The password for the wireless network has been changed for the fall semester.

The new password will appear on the first page of BruinData on Monday, Aug. 18.
