{"id":965,"date":"2013-02-15T02:56:01","date_gmt":"2013-02-15T02:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.dminlgp.com\/christianity-found-wanting\/"},"modified":"2013-02-15T02:56:01","modified_gmt":"2013-02-15T02:56:01","slug":"christianity-found-wanting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/christianity-found-wanting\/","title":{"rendered":"Christianity Found Wanting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Douthat\u2019s<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span>Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics<\/span><\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>is a<span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><\/span><\/span><span>serious review of the present condition \u00a0of Christianity in America.\u00a0 Christianity which once had significant influence on American life and history has fallen from those heights.\u00a0 It has now come face to face with its enemy. \u00a0Douthat points out that the enemy is not any external force but one that lies right within its walls. \u00a0Within its fold are shallow theologians, prosperity preachers, pop psychology writers, heretics and adaptionists \u00a0who have all contributed to such a down fall.\u00a0 As one reads on, there doesn\u2019t seem to be much hope left for a renaissance\u00a0(Hansen n.d.).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It was encouraging to discover a simple but solid plan for such a renewal in the final pages.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0He indicates that Faithful Christians can indeed make a difference.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0My heart resonates with\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Douthat\u2019s call to return to the orthodox Christian tradition and for its renewal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0Renewed Christianity must be political without being partisan<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0Renewed Christianity must be ecumenical but also confessional<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0Renewed Christianity should be moralistic but also holistic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The discussion in the book is solely about the American Church and American Christianity, however the institutionalized Church worldwide can identify with much of the underlying negative forces that have brought about its decline. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This reading has been helped me two ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>First, To review Christianity\u2019s unique contributions to pluralistic and multi cultural India. There are many but I will outline a few that are relevant to the present discussion:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Christianity is<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>helping people break free from a cyclical philosophy which dominates their lives.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>For someone committed to this way of belief and practice,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0life gets them nowhere. People are left helpless to break free from present predicaments.\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Into this never ending cyclic darkness comes the linear philosophy of the Christian Faith.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u201cI come quickly and my reward is with me.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009. I am .\u2009.\u2009. the beginning and the end.\u201d<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0This line moves forward and upward, ending only with the return of Christ and the ultimate triumph of righteousness.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It provides the person a motivation and drive to strive the dark tunnel of the present toward the light.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Another significant contribution is that the Christian Faith highlights the worth of the individual and brings equality and harmony into otherwise fragmented communities.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0In subaltern communities where people have been looked down and trampled upon by the structures and hierarchy of caste, gender and other considerations for centuries, the Christian Faith introduces the doctrine of self worth, a higher identity in Christ, and their place in society.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0It teaches that they are created in the image of God, equal and endowed with rights to enjoy the \u2018abundant life\u2019 Christ came to give, to live a life of freedom of choice and decision.<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Then, the Christian Faith provides the incentive for a capitalistic economy based on human values, the principles of integrity, equality, a strong work ethic and high morals. Christianity tears down hazy and negative cultural and religious beliefs that are not conducive to holistic development, both socially and economically.<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Secondly,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Douthat\u2019s<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Bad Religion<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>has helped identify several dangerous pitfalls that can be avoided by the growing indigenous Church as the Christian Faith gradually takes roots in the Indian soil.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0It has left me with challenging questions on my role as a Christian leader in the present context.\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>What should I do?\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>What are the snares that I must avoid?\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Hindsight is 20\/20.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>As a Chinese proverb goes: \u2018falling in a moat makes you all the wiser\u2019.\u00a0<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>There are many lessons to learn and pitfalls to avoid as the indigenous church is taking its baby steps forward toward growth and maturity.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBibliography\"><span>I conclude in full agreement with Douthat\u2019s sobering thoughts applying it to my life and ministry:<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBibliography\"><span>\u201cThe deeper trends that\u00a0 might inspire a Christian renaissance are beyond any individual believer\u2019s control.\u00a0 But the kind of faith that should animate such a renaissance can be lived out Christian by Christian, congregation by congregation, day by day without regard to whether it succeeds in changing the (American way of religion).\u00a0(Douthat 2012)\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBibliography\"><span>Douthat, Ross.
