{"id":828,"date":"2013-05-30T02:07:42","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T02:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.dminlgp.com\/a-full-bucket-and-a-tornado-disaster\/"},"modified":"2013-05-30T02:07:42","modified_gmt":"2013-05-30T02:07:42","slug":"a-full-bucket-and-a-tornado-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/a-full-bucket-and-a-tornado-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"A Full Bucket and a Tornado Disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Five Strategies for Increasing Positive Emotions<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This week I read, \u201cHow Full is Your Bucket\u201d and spent a considerable amount of time in Moore, Oklahoma helping people whose homes were decimated by an F5 tornado that was 1.5miles wide and on the ground for 17 miles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.tumblr.com\/83a1ab75a8d9d2f18174b1165c016f28\/tumblr_inline_mnl9pfYdt81qz4rgp.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think my reading would lend itself to a disaster site, but I was wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the relative immediate aftermath of a disaster, people epitomize the five strategies in Rath and Clifton\u2019s book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">1.<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><em>Prevent Bucket Dipping: <\/em>As responders who enter into a disaster area, we know that many families have literally fought for their lives and now own nothing. We\u2019re extra cautious to make sure we only bring positive thoughts and words to the families. The last thing we want to do is to add to their grief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">2.<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><em>Shine a Light on What\u2019s Bright<\/em>:\u00a0 Virtually all the families we met were grateful to be alive. They could have sulked that they had lost their homes and cars, but they clung to the realization they hadn\u2019t lost their lives. Being in such a situation shines a light on what really matters!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">3.<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><em>Make Best Friends: <\/em>The camaraderie and cohesion that develops within a disaster relief (DR) team is intense. You can go from not knowing sometime to virtually best friends when you spend all day working alongside someone and focusing on a meaningful goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>4.<\/em><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><em>Give Unexpectedly: <\/em>I can\u2019t count the number of times people came up to us and asked if we needed gloves, shoes, water, beer, lunch or a variety of other things. We were eternally grateful to turn around and have these unexpected blessings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>5.<\/em><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><em>Reverse the Golden Rule<\/em>: Responders go out of their way to treat people how they want to be treated, from moving furniture, to cutting trees to a variety of other things. Certainly that\u2019s easier in this situation because we\u2019re simply able to ask what their needs are and act accordingly!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Disasters don\u2019t only create chaos.
