{"id":816,"date":"2013-06-07T15:10:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-07T15:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.dminlgp.com\/bucket-filing-in-the-no-bs-crowd\/"},"modified":"2013-06-07T15:10:00","modified_gmt":"2013-06-07T15:10:00","slug":"bucket-filing-in-the-no-bs-crowd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/bucket-filing-in-the-no-bs-crowd\/","title":{"rendered":"Bucket Filing in The No BS Crowd"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Rath challenges the reader to use five strategies\u00a0\u00a0to fill the buckets of others and your own bucket with positive emotional strength. \u00a0I compete in bench rest shooting matches. \u00a0The bench rest shooting crowd is societally diverse in many ways, ethnically, economically, politically, and religiously.\u00a0\u00a0But there is one common thread that runs through most of the shooters, they are no BS people!\u00a0\u00a0Try and finesse them with smooth talk and they will quickly tell you where to go and how to get there!\u00a0\u00a0This past week I went to two bench rest matches as part of an Ohio State team.\u00a0\u00a0Armed with my two target guns and a fresh read of the book\u00a0How Full is Your Bucket by Tom Rath I entered the no BS zone! \u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>\u2022 \u00a0<\/span>Prevent (Stop) Bucket Dipping. \u00a0<span>Cynicism ran strong during the days of shooting and on numerous occasions I found myself ready to make negative comments if for no other reason than to &#8216;fit in&#8217; to the conversations. \u00a0I must say, I had to make a conscious concerted effort but I was largely successful. \u00a0And, it was good! \u00a0The reminder to be positive corresponds to the Biblical injunction in Philippians 4:8, &#8220;<\/span>And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.&#8221; \u00a0I think this first strategy was by far the most personally beneficial.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u2022 \u00a0Shine Light on what is Right. \u00a0The man who ran one of the matches was as crusty as they get. \u00a0He is a retired military sergeant and presently serves as a union official and prison guard supervisor. \u00a0Talk about a no-nonsense guy! \u00a0He enforces his rules by saying, &#8220;my way or the highway!&#8221; \u00a0I approached him just to get acquainted and listened for the opportunity to affirm him. \u00a0I did so and it was like magic! \u00a0He actually approached me several times later just to say hello. \u00a0He actually made an effort to talk with me before I departed to say that he was glad that I came to the match. \u00a0My friends were amazed!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u2022 \u00a0Make Best Friends. \u00a0One of the men with whom I traveled was particularly friendly. \u00a0He was easy to talk with and interested in many different topics. \u00a0He expressed some issues he was facing and I was able to listen and offer some questions that I thought would help him to process those issues. \u00a0We shared a room together and had many opportunities have significant conversations. \u00a0We are on the way to developing a good friendship. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u2022 \u00a0Give Unexpectedly. \u00a0Another of our traveling mates was an older guy who is always ready to help others with their shooting problems. \u00a0He is very sacrificial with his time and resources. \u00a0The other two travelers and myself decided to do something special for him and we took him out for a special stop at an ice cream shop. \u00a0He mentioned that he really likes ice cream and he really appreciated it. \u00a0I made a clear statement of my appreciation and the other two chimed in (they did not know about the book). \u00a0This episode taught me that giving can be &#8216;catchy!&#8217;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u2022 \u00a0Reverse the Golden Rule. \u00a0I was able to put this into practice on the last day of our shooting trip. \u00a0The driver is an individual who is very detail oriented and has little patience for those who are not proactive with their planning. \u00a0I made a special effort to assist him with the loading of the truck with our supplies and I particularly put things in the order in which I thought he would want to load. \u00a0I was amazed at how appreciative he was. \u00a0He even mentioned to the others that he was grateful for that help because it enabled him to have more time to interact with some friends rather than take so long to load the truck.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The book contained no new information but it was and is a good reminder concerning our interpersonal relationships. \u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rath challenges the reader to use five strategies\u00a0\u00a0to fill the buckets of others and your own bucket with positive emotional strength. \u00a0I compete in bench rest shooting matches. \u00a0The bench rest shooting crowd is societally diverse in many ways, ethnically, economically, politically, and religiously.\u00a0\u00a0But there is one common thread that runs through most of the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":47,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[2,324],"class_list":["post-816","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-dminlgp","tag-rath","cohort-lgp3"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/816","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/47"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=816"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/816\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=816"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=816"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=816"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
