Two \u201cleft feet\u201d and The Dip<\/p>\n
It was not going to happen this time.\u00a0 <\/span>I would not be frustrated and embarrassed.\u00a0 <\/span>I would not gaze into those wishful eyes and see the forced smiles exhibited by my wife.\u00a0 <\/span>This time, I was going to be good \u2013 I would learn to dance!<\/p>\n Raised as a Southern Baptist, dancing was strictly off-limits.\u00a0 <\/span>I never went to school dances or parties where that \u201cdevil\u2019s play\u201d was included.\u00a0 <\/span>I didn\u2019t even go to my Senior Prom, instead, an alternative party had been planned with G rated movies and punch.\u00a0 <\/span>That was all OK, until I left my small home-town and found out that Christians could dance and it wasn\u2019t biblically forbidden!<\/p>\n The outcome of my history is that it leaves me in a quandary of doubt and scuffed shoes during receptions at weddings and other opportunities where dancing takes place (I even struggle with YMCA and The Chicken Dance!).\u00a0 <\/span>Over time, I would learn a little on my own, learn a little again, but never improve.\u00a0 <\/span>I was in a \u201cCul-de-Sac.\u201d<\/p>\n My wife didn\u2019t dance a lot either but is naturally more inclined towards it than me (she must have been more of a sinner growing up!).\u00a0 <\/span>So, we try to dance. \u00a0<\/span>I don\u2019t do so well, and the result is a feeling of despair, doubt and distress.<\/p>\n My niece\u2019s wedding was coming up.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s in the Deep South – so a large affair with a live band and dancing.\u00a0 <\/span>I told LeAnn, \u201cIt\u2019s time to do something about this,\u201d and signed up for lessons at Arthur Murray.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n The first lesson was euphoric!\u00a0 <\/span>I seemed to advance quickly, with rhythm and the right moves, but then it got hard.\u00a0 <\/span>I entered in The Dip<\/em> as Seth Godin would say in the book by the same name.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n My teachers, who we call Mr. and Mrs., encouraged us through this difficult time.\u00a0 <\/span>Concentrate on just two steps (in other words, quite the wrong stuff and stick with the right stuff).\u00a0 <\/span>Come back to lessons, keep trying even when no progress seems evident.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n And it happened, with perseverance and \u201cleaning into it,\u201d I improved!\u00a0 <\/span>My wife and I were some of the most comfortable couples on the dance floor at the wedding reception.\u00a0 <\/span>We had visualized the finish line, endured the short-term pain for the long-term benefits, had concentrated on the few steps we knew, quitting the other distractions and came out on top.<\/p>\n We learned Seth Godin\u2019s secret, that \u201csuccess goes to those who obsess.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE \/* Style Definitions *\/ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:”Table Normal”;
