I had enough. I had been working as VP Regional Manager for the Southern Region for over 9 years. I was stuck in a rut, ready for a new challenge. Seth would call it, “stuck in a cul-de-sac (Godin, 2007, p 22). By nature, I am a design developer not a maintainer. I had accomplished the major goals I had set out to accomplish and the job now just required maintaining the status quo. I was getting bored and did not feel appreciated by my current supervisor. I was ready to search for a new job.

On the other hand, the CEO of my company, asked me to head up a new division to start a new business consulting in China to help the Chinese to develop housing services for their older adults. Seth would call this a steep dip opportunity for superstars (Grdin, 2007, p.32). Of his 8 dip curve opportunities, this would be considered a “conceptual dip” an opportunity to re-evaluate existing assumptions and change to a new paradigm. My company is one of the top Continuing Care Retirement Community nonprofit organizations in the country and now we are exploring the opportunity to transfer this model of caring for older adults in China.

Needless to say, The Dip was a timely book that helped me to make the decision to take the promotion and to help develop a new business in China. My wife and I have deeply evaluated the opportunity, prayed much and discussed it with mentors. All these factors have led us to accept the position even though it is a significant career risk. We believe God has opened this door and we want to be in the center of his will. We are willing to lean into this steep dip and see what God has in store for us.

Godin, Seth, The Dip. 2007.
