{"id":790,"date":"2013-06-25T13:59:52","date_gmt":"2013-06-25T13:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.dminlgp.com\/?p=790"},"modified":"2013-06-25T13:59:52","modified_gmt":"2013-06-25T13:59:52","slug":"inspire-like-a-shepherd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/inspire-like-a-shepherd\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspire like a shepherd"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>This week I read \u201e<a href=\"http:\/\/www.startwithwhy.com\/\">Start with why<\/a>\u201c by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_Sinek\">Simon Sinek<\/a>. You can either read the book or you watch his superb TED talk he did 2009. (It is the 7<sup>th<\/sup> most watched TED Talk\u2026 So its not going to be a waste \u2013 trust me!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>The book adds some thoughts and material to the brief topics he raises in his talk. Sinek wonders, why some leaders are more inspiring than others. He states that <\/span><span>most simply follow a natatural pattern: They communicate and think \u201eoutside-in.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.tumblr.com\/3c6016be5b11d068920c6ee99e3dc0aa\/tumblr_inline_moybxjBaKH1qz4rgp.png\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>WHAT: This is what an organization does<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>HOW: This is the process<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>WHY: The core mission statement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Sinek suggest, we should follow the more inspiring figures and communicate from the \u201cinside-out\u201d. Starting at the top, our \u201cnewest\u201d (evolutionary) brain, our Homo-Sapien Brain, called our Neocortex \u2013 it\u2019s our what, it\u2019s responsible for all our rational, analytical thought, and language.The middle two section make up our Limbic brains, which is for feelings, trust, and loyalty, it\u2019s also responsible for all human behavior and decision making. It has no capacity for language. In other words, when we communicate from the outside in, yes, people can understand vast amounts of complicated information, features and benefits and facts and figures, it just doesn\u2019t drive behavior. Most of the people, when discussing Sinek\u2019s thoughts stick with the golden circle. By actually the golden circle is only a tool that implements the logic in his system. Its about the WHY, as a core element, that its to be communicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.tumblr.com\/21577365896a28f52efcf31422d68f1e\/tumblr_inline_moybzbWW511qz4rgp.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>This made me think of a funeral I held this week. The bible verse of the sermon was psalm 23. the good shepherd. It matched my literature for this week. The shepherd implements the inside-out system of Sinek in his leadership. While cows and other cattle are pushed and driven to the meadows, sheep are lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><strong>They simply follow.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Other cattle works different. You have to push them, or put them into a fenced area. Sheep follow and stick with the shepherd. The shepherd as the leader figure had to attract all the attention of the sheep. This is inspiration: to choose the right attractions and to meet the urgent needs. This can only be archived, when you lead inside-out. First you act answering the WYH, then the HOW and the WHAT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.tumblr.com\/4b3368b9137b23a11545dfbc278e2c20\/tumblr_inline_moyc0nWk6e1qz4rgp.gif\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>This fits to my leadership idea. I don\u2019t want to lead cowboy, forcing his cattle during a roundup or fencing them in to keep them from running away. I\u2019d rather want to be a shepherd (pastor= lat. shepherd). I want inspire people and attract them with the core, my mission the WHY\u2026 This is very relieving, because it also keeps from being narcissistic or pastor-centered.
