{"id":744,"date":"2013-09-05T23:08:27","date_gmt":"2013-09-05T23:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta.dminlgp.com\/?p=744"},"modified":"2014-10-28T17:42:51","modified_gmt":"2014-10-28T17:42:51","slug":"a-visual-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/a-visual-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"A Visual Faith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I am often in the Atlanta airport.\u00a0 Never it seems, is my departing plane in the same area as where I land, so I find myself traveling from concourse to concourse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There are two options of navigation in this, the world\u2019s largest airport.\u00a0 One is to take advantage of the tram that whisks between the concourses \u2013 or, you can walk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.tumblr.com\/330b55e1724f06facae00a2318bbcea6\/tumblr_inline_msodgkpO9G1qz4rgp.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!-- [if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p>Normal<br \/>\n0<\/p>\n<p>false<br \/>\nfalse<br \/>\nfalse<\/p>\n<p>EN-US<br \/>\nX-NONE<br \/>\nX-NONE<\/p>\n<p><!-- [if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p><!-- [if gte mso 10]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p>\/* Style Definitions *\/<br \/>\ntable.MsoNormalTable<br \/>\n{mso-style-name:&#8221;Table Normal&#8221;;<br \/>\nmso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;<br \/>\nmso-tstyle-colband-size:0;<br \/>\nmso-style-noshow:yes;<br \/>\nmso-style-priority:99;<br \/>\nmso-style-parent:&#8221;&#8221;;<br \/>\nmso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;<br \/>\nmso-para-margin-top:0in;<br \/>\nmso-para-margin-right:0in;<br \/>\nmso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt;<br \/>\nmso-para-margin-left:0in;<br \/>\nline-height:115%;<br \/>\nmso-pagination:widow-orphan;<br \/>\nfont-size:11.0pt;<br \/>\nfont-family:&#8221;Calibri&#8221;,&#8221;sans-serif&#8221;;<br \/>\nmso-ascii-font-family:Calibri;<br \/>\nmso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;<br \/>\nmso-hansi-font-family:Calibri;<br \/>\nmso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If not in a hurry, I walk.\u00a0 And for quite some time, there have been sculptures, art and carvings from Zimbabwe exhibited in the corridors.\u00a0 Strong, angry, desperate visions of a suffering country that has been raped by leadership seems to flow from these works of art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">William Dyrness, in his book <em>Visual Faith<\/em>, quotes a Japanese artist, Fujimura, who found himself responding to Christ through a poem by William Blake.\u00a0 Although that wasn\u2019t necessary the author\u2019s intent, it shows how art can always take us to the Creator.\u00a0 Through the images portrayed in the airport in Atlanta, I too, am challenged by the Creator about justice and my next steps in life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It hasn\u2019t always been that way for me or for many pastors who live by the spoken word.\u00a0 Recently, our church\u2019s annual pastor\u2019s retreat was held at a conference room at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.\u00a0 An hour was given during the day for contemplation of the exhibits.\u00a0 Regrettably, many finished early and went back to studying their Bibles and manuals, believing that words have much more power than the visual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Dyrness states that we \u201clive in a generation raised on a steady diet of the visual.\u201d\u00a0 But yet we continue to rely on words for communication.\u00a0 He continues, saying that \u201cGod\u2019s purposes, rather than being seen as law-like, can be understood as potentials within creation,\u201d when art is present.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Erwin McManus and Rob Bell are a few that get it. \u00a0They have broadened their influence, from only speaking and writing, investing in videos, movies, retail, a line of leather goods and when they do write, even the books are laid out in a creative, artistic form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Although we have been trained to feel, that for the Christian message to be promulgated, art needs to be explained with words, Dyrness reminds us that images can have their own impact and can \u201caffect us deeply, drawing us closer to God.\u201d\u00a0 My prayer is that we echo the same thoughts and allow art to blossom \u2013 for God\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am often in the Atlanta airport.\u00a0 Never it seems, is my departing plane in the same area as where I land, so I find myself traveling from concourse to concourse.
