Kong: A City of Contrasts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I arrived in Hong Kong, I was not quite sure what to expect. \u00a0While I understood it was where East met West, I questioned how that would play out within the life of the city. \u00a0Would it be more West than East or the converse? \u00a0Once I saw the stunning views and the immensity of the city, I found that it would be equally East and West.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/early-walk-e1447906572822.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium as I awoke was to explore the city with Kevin and Phil. \u00a0As I walked the shore line, I could not believe the towering skyscrapers and the beautiful bay. \u00a0If it were not for the Chinese writing, I would have thought I was in New York City, yet it was different in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>The city was a picture of juxtapositions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/hk-apple-e1447906480694.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6646\" in tune with what the younger generation needs. \u00a0Technology rules the day in Hong Kong. \u00a0As we looked onto the Apple store, we realized the new phone was released that day. \u00a0Scores of people were ready to get their hands on the latest phone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/primitive-e1447906530436.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" clamored for the phones, one could not help but see this city as ancient as well. \u00a0These &#8220;natural medication&#8221; shops were every where. \u00a0While the city was very modern, it was also primitive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/rail-cars-e1447906511453.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6648\" the busier streets in the financial district demonstrated its modern appeal with mixtures of antiquated methods. \u00a0The street cars were certainly helpful, but they had been around many years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Wealthy-e1447906544806.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6650\" about Hong Kong was the wealth. \u00a0Whether it was Cartier, Tiffany&#8217;s Ferrari&#8217;s or Gucci, it was evident that Hong Kong was a great city of wealth. \u00a0Unfortunately, there too was a contrast. \u00a0Once we learned the process of China&#8217;s vacation policy, it was easy to see that much of the wealth was generated by outside sources.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/group-discussion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6653\" src=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/group-discussion.jpg\" alt=\"group discussion\" width=\"274\" height=\"206\" city was the opportunity to share it with a group of peers that challenged my thinking and offered encouragement and direction for this doctoral journey. \u00a0Whether we were walking to Starbucks in the morning or eating at Hutong, one of the top Chinese restaurants in the world with a spectacular view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/modern-city-e1447906558150.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6651\" src=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/modern-city-e1447906558150-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"modern city\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" that stuck with me in Hong Kong was the juxtaposition between young and old.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/older-man-e1447906448336.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6644\" src=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/older-man-e1447906448336-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"older man\" old man exercise, I cannot help but think what he had seen in Hong Kong. \u00a0Did he experience the transfer of power from the British. \u00a0Will he be alive as the power is transferred back to China? \u00a0I pondered whether he saw China as a threat in the 80s and 90s, or whether they have been an ally in his mind?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dminlgp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/law-e1447906464112.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6645\" Linklaters, China would look more like Hong Kong in the next 30 years. \u00a0The future seems sure to the brilliant and hospitable staff at the great law firm.<\/p>\n<p><a bright for both Hong Kong and China, I wondered if everyone sees it with that perspective. \u00a0The main question that haunted while I was in the beautiful land was simple. \u00a0What is it like not to know for sure that freedom is secure?
