{"id":38879,"date":"2024-10-16T00:17:59","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T07:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/?p=38879"},"modified":"2024-10-16T00:37:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T07:37:09","slug":"quadrilateral-of-priorities-the-make-up-of-evangelicalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.georgefox.edu\/dlgp\/quadrilateral-of-priorities-the-make-up-of-evangelicalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Quadrilateral of Priorities &#8211; The Make-up of Evangelicalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201c<em>Evangelicalism\u00a0in\u00a0Modern\u00a0Britain:\u00a0A\u00a0History\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a01730s\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a01980s<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0by\u00a0David\u00a0Bebbington\u00a0is comprehensive historical study of the evangelical movement in Britain from the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century to late 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> This book explores how evangelicalism has influenced and been shaped by British society over time. Furthermore, Bebbington examines key periods and events such as the impact of the evangelical movement in the 19th century its resurgence after World War II and the various cultural trends that have influenced the movement.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the Wesley Methodist Church in my hometown, Penang, I joined a local church, <em>Latter Rain Evangelical Church<\/em> (not Latter Days Saints). Attending Latter Rain church was a life changing time for me \u2014 my spiritual life matured drastically, my prayer life improved and I discovered that the Word of God is alive. Each verse breathes life into me. My Christian life rooted from an evangelical foundation. Yet, I have never spent time to explore the meaning or the history of the evangelical movement.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate this book, especially learning about the four characteristics Bebbington listed, \u201cquadrilateral of priorities\u201d referred to as Bebbington\u2019s quadrilateral.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> These four characteristics are \u201c<em>conversionism,<\/em>\u00a0the belief that lives need to be changed;\u00a0<em>activism<\/em>, the expression of the gospel in effort<em>; biblicism<\/em>, a particular regard for the Bible; and what may be called\u00a0<em>crucicentrism<\/em>, a stress on the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is Evangelical?\u201d It emphasizes on the following:<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Centrality of the Cross and the study of the Bible<\/li>\n<li>The importance of personal conversion experience, \u201cborn again\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The need for active expression of faith through good works and evangelism<\/li>\n<li>The significance of Jesus Christ atoning death and resurrection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In\u00a0many\u00a0ways,\u00a0I see Jesus as an evangelist. He preached the \u201cgood news\u201d of the Kingdom of God. He traveled extensively to spread his teachings and emphasized repentance faith and the love of God. His mission was to reach people from all walks of life encouraging them to transform their hearts and their lives. Essentially, He laid the foundation for what would become the core practices of evangelism so yes, He was the trailblazer in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>Based on Dr. Jason Clark\u2019s chapter 2.2 What is Evangelicalism?<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> This\u00a0passage\u00a0highlights\u00a0key\u00a0points\u00a0in\u00a0David\u00a0Bebbington&#8217;s\u00a0analysis\u00a0of\u00a0Evangelicalism,\u00a0specifically\u00a0its\u00a0unique\u00a0characteristics\u00a0and\u00a0its\u00a0historical\u00a0context:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Four\u00a0Key\u00a0Characteristics:\u00a0Bebbington&#8217;s\u00a0quadrilateral\u00a0of\u00a0priorities\u2014offers\u00a0a\u00a0framework\u00a0to\u00a0distinguish\u00a0Evangelicalism\u00a0from\u00a0earlier\u00a0Protestant\u00a0movements,\u00a0particularly\u00a0Puritanism.\u00a0These\u00a0elements\u00a0together\u00a0create\u00a0a\u00a0distinct\u00a0identity\u00a0for\u00a0Evangelicalism.<\/li>\n<li>Break from Puritanism: The passage underscores Babbington&#8217;s assertation that Evangelicalism marks a significant departure from Puritan Christianity, especially in its activism. Puritans are known for their intense focus on personal and community morality.<\/li>\n<li>Influence of the Enlightenment: The development of Evangelicalism is seen in the context of the Enlightenment, which brought new ideas of progress and a better future. This era fostered a sense of confidence and assurance in faith that translated into vigorous activism among Evangelicals.<\/li>\n<li>Noll\u2019s Perspectives: While agreeing with Bebbington, Noll offers his views by recognizing continuities with Puritanism. He sees Evangelicalism as a revival of Puritan heart religion but acknowledges additional contextual factors that shaped it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The Spirit Pour Out: Springs of the Charismatic Movement\u201d<\/em> in chapter 7<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a> is my favorite reading for this assignment.<\/p>\n<p>I remember my first experience speaking in tongues. I could imagine the book of Acts playing on my mind and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. I chuckled how Bebbington used the word \u201coutbreak\u201d to describe the outpouring of the Spirit.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Baptism\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0Holy\u00a0Spirit:\u00a0Charismatics\u00a0believe\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0distinct\u00a0experience\u00a0of\u00a0being\u00a0baptized\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0Holy\u00a0Spirit, which\u00a0empowers\u00a0believers\u00a0for\u00a0service\u00a0and\u00a0witness.<\/li>\n<li>Spiritual\u00a0Gifts:\u00a0The\u00a0movement\u00a0places\u00a0a\u00a0strong\u00a0emphasis\u00a0on\u00a0spiritual\u00a0gifts,\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0speaking\u00a0in\u00a0tongues,<\/li>\n<li>prophecy, healing,\u00a0and\u00a0miracles,\u00a0as\u00a0described\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0New\u00a0Testament.<\/li>\n<li>Worship\u00a0and\u00a0Prayer:\u00a0Charismatic\u00a0worship\u00a0is\u00a0often\u00a0characterized\u00a0by\u00a0lively,\u00a0expressive\u00a0forms\u00a0of\u00a0prayer\u00a0and<\/li>\n<li>praise, including\u00a0spontaneous\u00a0singing,\u00a0dancing,\u00a0and\u00a0other\u00a0forms\u00a0of\u00a0physical\u00a0expression.<\/li>\n<li>Renewal\u00a0and\u00a0Revival:\u00a0The\u00a0movement\u00a0is\u00a0seen\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0renewal\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Holy\u00a0Spirit\u00a0within\u00a0mainline\u00a0and\u00a0non-denominational\u00a0churches,\u00a0aiming\u00a0to\u00a0revive\u00a0the\u00a0spiritual\u00a0fervor\u00a0and\u00a0commitment\u00a0of\u00a0believers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My takeaway is that I will certainly make time to read this book again because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is interesting to understand religious\u00a0history\u00a0and\u00a0cultural\u00a0change.<\/li>\n<li>It helped me go deeper to understand\u00a0how\u00a0Evangelicalism\u00a0shaped\u2014and\u00a0was\u00a0shaped\u00a0by\u2014British\u00a0society.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0spans\u00a0over\u00a0two\u00a0centuries,\u00a0showing\u00a0the\u00a0evolution\u00a0and\u00a0influence\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0movement\u00a0that\u00a0still\u00a0has\u00a0a<\/li>\n<li>significant\u00a0impact\u00a0today.<\/li>\n<li>It helped me understand the core principles of evangelicalism and how it interacted with key historical periods like enlightenment.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0not\u00a0just\u00a0a\u00a0historical\u00a0recount;\u00a0it is\u00a0about\u00a0how\u00a0beliefs\u00a0transform\u00a0lives\u00a0and\u00a0societies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><\/a>Bebbington\u00a0concluded\u00a0<strong>&#8220;<\/strong><em>Evangelicalism\u00a0in\u00a0Modern\u00a0Britain:\u00a0A\u00a0History\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a01730s\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a01980s<\/em><strong>&#8220;<\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0emphasizing\u00a0the enduring impact of Evangelicalism on British society.
